The strict clubs required deer to have a forked horn.

I also remember the doe days of the late 80's. At daylight it was a war zone. Me & my buddies ran man drives on every piece of property we could access. Shot every deer we could. It was a bloodbath!! I also remember the timing being when kids were out of school for the holidays (right during the rut here).

Can remember deer drives when the Walker dogs were as big as the does. Also remember years when deer died off in early spring.

By my recollection it is not an era I would like to see repeated.

I am glad my recollection is a lot better than yours smile
On the other hand maybe if my memories were as bad as yours I could appreciate the state of hunting as it is today wink

I did not kill any myself and only two were killed on my lease of 1500 acres.

Some of us need liberal days... When your seeing 10-12-18 does on a field....it's time to kill em... And I have been...and so have the others here... I shoot em when it's as late as I can see....

I can remember those days....definitely don't have that pleasure anymore. And would go back in a minute because our deer was just as healthy then as now. I guess my land just has better habitat than some because we never had skinny deer or a browse line.

Yeah, we used to hunt a place you could see 20 to 60 deer a day from daylight to dark. Property was 4200 acres. I saw 23 racked bucks in one day back in 2005. Biologist said we needed to kill a minimum of 125 does, We did. After that, it was normally 4, at best 8 deer a day for 4 years, but got better every year after, with less female deer killed. I know where I hunt now in Chambers and Tallapoosa, if you see 10 - 12 - 18 deer an afternoon on a greenfield, you have some exceptional property or either own the property and have the right to manage the habitat, but with leases and lumber companies, having that right doesn't exist. Odd thing is, we killed 120 to 150 inch deer when we had deer around every corner, and still killed the same size deer after the murder years, so I don't buy into the argument that '' thinning the does '' makes the deer healthier and bucks headgear bigger. I never remember seeing a deer starving or down with scurvy or anorexia before the QDMA kill all the does craze became the new catch phrase for Alabama hunting.

I would rather it be 2 or 3 does per year. When we had doe days I never saw them during the doe days and then they were running all over me when I couldn't shoot them. The problem with it is the same as the 3 buck deal. No tags equals no way to monitor how many are killed. My idea would be to institute a tagging system, you get a doe tag and a buck tag at the beginning of the season and get new ones every time you harvest a deer. You would be allowed up to 3 of each. The current system has no teeth and there are still lots of people killing more than 3 bucks. Heard a guy in early January say that he had killed 5 bucks and the biggest was a 5 point. Tags work in every state that they have been adopted but for some reason many believe they will not here?

There is no need for the 3 buck limit, If doe kill numbers are cut back. If you have does they will keep making more bucks.

All I know is that 25 years ago deer were very few and far between where I grew up in NW AL. We would go to Pickens county every weekend to hunt b/c basically there weren't any deer around where I lived to hunt. I vividly remember the first deer I saw there in 1989, it was a small 6pt running down the middle of the railroad tracks. I thought it best day ever to see a 6pt only a mile from my house.

Nowadays there are as many or more deer (with bigger racks) there now than there where/are where we hunted in Pickens County. So obviously the "State" did something right.

I personally wish we could still kill two doe a day so I wouldn't have to mess up as many hunts doing much needed doe killing.

If you can't kill a deer in AL now pretty much anytime you want to then you should probably take up golf or some other sissy sport. The folks that really want to kill deer are finding plenty to kill. Just look on the doe poll....some guys are killing multiple does (with bows and arrows) on public land of all places!

I only saw 11 does on the roadside in a 10 mile stretch between Fayette and Reform today shortly after dark, not counting the dead one in the middle of the road at 3PM.
