Leg bands don't have antennas, transmitters (worn on the back) do.

The transmitter was on a band attached to it's leg... I didn't say it was an NWTF band... Unless they glue the transmitters to the leg it must be attached some way...

This is an interesting thread to me. Are there any counties in Alabama that does not have a spring turkey season this year due to low population.

Yea, attached to the back like a backpack. They don't go on the leg, too small, too low, too much interference to the bird walking, and too much chance of coming off. Antennas need to be as high as possible also to transmit a clear signal. Bands go on the leg but not transmitters or antennas.

The one that was killed on our property was attached to the leg... I wish I still had the pics to post and show you.... It was a State project and not a university study according to the Bio we took it to....

Does anybody on here know any specific areas where birds will be monitored? I was told of a specific property in Jackson County today REALLY close to public land.

I've killed one with a band in Tennessee, but that is all it had on one leg. I sent in the numbers hoping to learn where it came from and they couldn't tell me anything about it. Some more good it did to band them. I won't worry with turning any bands or tags anymore. I've got a drawer full of fish tags from wheeler.

If they ever put some of those bright orange "don't shoot" collars on turkeys like they do on deer they may be disappointed with the outcome. grin

I know that's right. Dang deer hunters are easy and listened to the don't shoot. I see it as a challenge.

The northern Alabama counties, saving Jackson, opened up seasons in the mid 90s. Limestone, Lauderdale, Madison, and Lawrence. In the early years it was a five day season now it is April 1-30 in those counties. And this is in only certain areas. Morgan county has only had a season for three or four years, and its only five days long. Certain areas are not even open.

I hate having to live in north Alabama, because it has terrible turkey numbers, and southern Tennessee has terrible numbers as well. Its at least a good two hours drive for me to even go somewhere with a handful of gobblers. Within this state.
