This makes month #2 to have a 400.00 gas&utilities bill, had a guy come out today and said he did find a small gas leak that was before the meter, I smelled the mercaptain yesterday so I knew something was up. Gas company wouldn't help since it was before the meter.......my question, I have gas heat abd gas hot water heater, that's it.. would I benefit from going all electric? I'm thinking about going with a heat pump and electric hot water heater.. I can't keep paying these gas bills!

Don't ever get a heat pump. I had one before moving in a house with gas. I never want another heat pump.

Heat pumps are great until it gets below freezing, then they are no longer efficient and the heat strips kick in.
If i could pick, I'd have an on demand gas water heater and a heat pump. That would be the best combo, IMO.

It's not the gas that's costing you $$$$,it's the old house with poor insulation, you will not see any difference by going electric without properly insulating the house Good point, I just can't get ahead it seems

Last thing we did was upgrade to the Train Heat Pump.

Definitely see where you can insulate better or replace windows if needed. That'd be my first step. If and when you do replace your HVAC unit. Replace it with a dual fuel system. It is a heat pump with gas back up heat. Best of both worlds. You have the efficiency of a heat pump down to around 35* with out drying out the air like the gas heat will do. You can then set a lock out point if an outdoor sensor is installed and lock out the heat pump and only run gas heat below 35* or what ever set point you decide on. It also works as a typical heat pump, when it goes into defrost instead of bringing on expensive resistance heat, it'll bring on the gas heat during defrost mode. Of course, this unit is slightly more expensive. However, you would make back the difference fairly quick. Also the efficiency of the new system would outright save you more than that older system your running. Heck may save you enough per month to cover the monthly payment if you financed it or had a mo pmt on it.

A good start would be to blow in a good thick blanket of insulation in the attic. Walls are a little harder though, unless You have vinyl siding. It's not that expensive. You could do it Yourself. Lowes and Home Cheapo will loan You the blower if You buy their insulation. It would probably pay for itself in a couple or three years. ^^^^^ this

I live in a house that was built in the early 1900's.. We have two gas heaters on the wall and some electric style amish heaters.. We stay just fine, go through about 250 gallon of propane a year. BUT, my wife and kids wears clothes in the house, instead of shorts and t shirts.. makes a big difference. Like right now, it is 28 outside and 68 inside.. thats with everything on low, and we are fine.. Clothes are cheaper than anything
