I keep hearing folks complain about their "newer" gm autos burning/using oil. I was talking with my mechanic buddy lastnight about my 06 Sierra and after we were done he told me about the newer ones losing oil. Evidently there is a bulletin on the issue and a cure for the problem. So save your breath on the my truck is better than yours and my dad can beat up your dad blah blah blah comments. I'm just trying to help some folks out that may have the issue and are worried about it.

I do hope that Chevy truck and SUV owners can find a reasonable solution to the oil problem. Those are good looking, comfortable vehicles that cost owners a LOT of money each month in payments.
One of my friends who has a 2007 Silverado with the famous oil consumption problem has received this advice from the local Chevrolet dealer service department: "Use a bunch of thick Lucas Oil Treatment. Maybe that will slow consumption."

GM should be horse whipped the way they handled this issue. People like me with GM trucks and SUVs have been complaining for years on oil consumption issues. But GM would not do anything.
Now they put out a TSB in 2013 but will not do a recall. Many of us with 2007-2009 trucks are way over 100,00 miles and/or 5 years by the time they put out that bulletin in Feb 2013. Had my truck at GMC dealership multiple times from 2009-2011 trying to get problem fixed. Now they say there is a warranty issue if you are under 5 years/100,000 miles.
Hate GMC for that, but love GMC trucks non the less. I just keep oil in my toolbox. I'm adding 3-4 quarts every 5,000 miles. Truck is paid for and runs great, long as it has oil.

I pulled my valve cover on my 07 Suburban and cleaned the PCV baffles real good and it helped alot. Took about 20 minutes.
I maintain my vehicles and checking oil has always been a part of owning anything with an engine.

We bought my wife a 2009 Yukon 2 years ago. Neither my family nor hers have GM vehicles so we were not aware of this. We do like the Yukon but wow she about messed it up. She let the vehicle get to around 18% oil on the monitor and when we changed it it barely filled up an empty quart. She was just used to going by the 3k-5k mileage mark. That could have been disastrous if she would have blown the motor.

Chevy has oil sensors that let you know if they get about a quart low. It will ding and display "low oil" where the odometer is.
women don't read those. Or She must a thought it was the gas light and had two weeks left.

If your wife is like mine, she wouldn't check the oil in an engine EVER in her lifetime. If I die first, my wife will ruin engine after engine from sheer neglect.

Guys--I'm pretty sure the monitor on the dash is an oil life monitor; it does not tell you how much oil you actually have left. When you get to 0%, you change your oil. 0% does not mean you are actually out of oil. We bought my wife a 2009 Yukon 2 years ago. Actually, I think the car wouldn't start one day. That is when we determined it was so low after doing some investigating. She is good about keeping up with her mileage and she did notice on the dash where it said 18% oil but I believe she just assumed it was wrong and hadn't been reset because we do not take the vehicle to the dealership for servicing. But now we know and we have to keep an eye out for it because it burns off quickly. We traded that one in for another Yukon and have not had the issue yet. Tex - I thought the same thing but I think it reset itself after the oil change and then drastically dropped again much quicker than it should have. It has been a while since we had that Yukon and I can't remember exactly now. Either way it was much lower than it should have been at that point.

It dings and displays 'low oil'.

I finally got ride of my 2007 Gmc Sierra because of this. After having the dealership do a 2500.00 repair to the heads to fix the issue. It on only helped for a few months and then was back to the same oil usage.

I also have NEVER had a "Low Oil" warning light message or anything. It will say shut off engine if the main oil pressure switch does not register oil pressure. The check engine light will come on if the switch that runs the gauge loose pressure.

I got news for yall, its not just GM. . I got 2 2011 Ford 350 vans I maintain at work and I cant keep oil in the damn things. My 09 chevy at work only has 30K and hasnt started using it yet, the vans are both at 60 and 80k and use 3-5 quarts between changes. Both running the 5.4.
