We use grass twine and up until about 3 years ago we never cut it off. We started using feed wagons when we got enough barns to hold all of our hay and now we cut it all off so they can pull it apart easier out of the wagons. We feed 550 rolls give or take 50 a year and have never had one choke.

We always used the sisal twine. So did my papaw and he was running about 300 head of momma cows. We never had a problem, and never cut the strings.

Been many years ago, but we didn't leave any strings for a cow to possibly choke on. We'd cut the baler-twine strings and throw them away.

I cut them off and pull them out. With the net, i will cut it loose and pull it up when they have eaten the bale. I don't know that the guy used this last batch of bales I got, but it has rotted away before I started feeding. The bales are good and tight so I can still get them into the hay ring but I have never had rotted string rot that fast. I think he took me and sold last years hay.

We use net wrap now and we cut it off before we feed it. Before that we used poly twine and we cut it off before we fed it. Before that we used sisal twine and we cut it off before we fed it. There's a pattern there.....
I can't stand to see hay string balled up on everything in a pasture and woods.
I tied a 5 gallon bucket to the driver side front end loader bracket on every tractor. The net, or string goes in the bucket and then on the burning pile.

Usually poly on the rolls we feed our horse and goats. I've never cut them off, and never had any problems...just loops of twine on the ground when the rolls are gone.

Cut them off, won't take a chance losing a $2000 heifer because I was too lazy to cut the strings.

My whole life we used poly and you (I) had to wade in knee deep chit to cut it off. Fast forward to me leaving for college... We now use sisal and it doesn't get cut off. Bull@$%# Dang man, stop on the dry ground and cut the twine off before you get in the muck where the roll goes.....

When I worked at a cattle farm years ago not cutting and collecting hay bale twine would get you fired on the spot. When we had our own cattle I still did it and if I owned cattle today I still would.
