Ok, I have always used poly twine or net wrap. Mainly for the $$ of it and durability. But I have a friend who feeds a lot of hay, around 400+ bales a year. He uses sisal "grass" twine and he doesn't cut the strings off. Just feeds it. To my knowledge in the 8 years I have known him, he has never had a problem with a cow chokeing. I had a heifer choke to death prob 10 years ago on a poly twine string. But I cut it off no matter what. How do y'all do it?? Just wandering.

We use grass twine and up until about 3 years ago we never cut it off. We started using feed wagons when we got enough barns to hold all of our hay and now we cut it all off so they can pull it apart easier out of the wagons. We feed 550 rolls give or take 50 a year and have never had one choke.

We always used the sisal twine. So did my papaw and he was running about 300 head of momma cows. We never had a problem, and never cut the strings.

Been many years ago, but we didn't leave any strings for a cow to possibly choke on. We'd cut the baler-twine strings and throw them away.

I cut them off and pull them out. With the net, i will cut it loose and pull it up when they have eaten the bale. I don't know that the guy used this last batch of bales I got, but it has rotted away before I started feeding. The bales are good and tight so I can still get them into the hay ring but I have never had rotted string rot that fast. I think he took me and sold last years hay.

We use net wrap now and we cut it off before we feed it. Before that we used poly twine and we cut it off before we fed it. Before that we used sisal twine and we cut it off before we fed it. There's a pattern there.....

I can't stand to see hay string balled up on everything in a pasture and woods.

I tied a 5 gallon bucket to the driver side front end loader bracket on every tractor. The net, or string goes in the bucket and then on the burning pile.

Usually poly on the rolls we feed our horse and goats. I've never cut them off, and never had any problems...just loops of twine on the ground when the rolls are gone.

My whole life we used poly and you (I) had to wade in knee deep chit to cut it off. Fast forward to me leaving for college... We now use sisal and it doesn't get cut off. Bull@$%#

Cut them off, won't take a chance losing a $2000 heifer because I was too lazy to cut the strings.

I feed 500 to 600 rolls a year and always cut twine off because if you don't it gets wrapped around your axles and makes your seals leak on your tractor. As for the people that don't cut net off one of our customers has 1500 cows and 1000 to 1500 feeders calves didn't cut his wrap off and he lost 10 cows last year due to this.

Dang man, stop on the dry ground and cut the twine off before you get in the muck where the roll goes.....

When I worked at a cattle farm years ago not cutting and collecting hay bale twine would get you fired on the spot. When we had our own cattle I still did it and if I owned cattle today I still would.

when i worked cattle we rolled around 2500 to 3000 a year with net wrap and always took it off. I mean to me it's not worth the risk of killing a cow when it takes less than 30 seconds to snatch the net wrap off a bale of hay. It also keeps a pasture cleaner to.

We have never used the wrap but we don't cut strings and we have never had a cow choke. What we have had is string on equipment and one cow got a small piece wrapped around a tit. It swelled up to about the size of my fist then we cut it and she was fine.
