This cracks me up. Sounds like some high school kids I knew years ago. We set up in the same spot later (when I wasn't raining). Truck pulls up and stops right across from, I'm on the ground with the camera, maybe 40 FEET from him. Driver gets out and pulls a rifle from behind the seat. Passenger, drinking a beer, says it ain't real. Driver says it is and loads gun. Passenger says it ain't real. I move the head and driver blasts it. LOL I walk over to the truck and tell him to put the gun on the ground. Passenger tells him I told you it wasn't real....
I get license from shooter and the passenger hands me his also, I hand it back and tell him he isn't getting a ticket, I heard him tell the guy not to shoot!!!!
Gun was a Legenday Lawman 30/30.....LOL

I remember a story I heard about our GW in Covington Co. back in the 70's. His name was Johnny Holloway.
A guy shot a deer one night that ran a little way into the woods before it crashed. He went and found it, but couldn't get it to the truck by himself, so he went back to town to get a couple buddies to help. They got back to the deer, everyone grabbed a leg, and they started for the truck. About halfway, they stopped for a breather, and one of the guys commented that it was a good thing there were four of them to drag the deer out. The poacher, remembering how many people he had enlisted to help, said, "there aren't supposed to be but 3 of us dragging him out." Johnny's voice in the dark, "There aren't supposed to be any of us dragging him out!"

I know none of you righteous fellas have ever done anything like this, but I got a decoy story for you... When we were juniors in high school (1991) a buddy and I skipped school one day to go hunting on Cheaha Mountain. Around late morning we decided to ride into Talladega to grab a burger. The road you would take is named Twin Churches Rd, and nowadays it is just mile after mile of huge crop fields, but back then those fields were separated by privet hedge rows. The road is straight for very long distances in most places. As we're riding along we see a group of local dog hunters all pulled over along side of that road maybe a few hundred yards ahead, just standing around their trucks. Simultaneously I saw a good buck standing down one of those privet rows and told my friend to STOP, I was gonna kill that sucker right in front of those doggers (whom we knew well). I could just see myself teasing them about killing that big buck out from under their noses. We pull over, I start to get out, and my friend begins to gruffly tell me to "get the $%^@$ in the truck NOW!!!" I look at him questioningly, and he tells me again and starts to pull off. I jump back in and we turn around and speed off. He says one of those guys had walked out into the road and was waving his orange hat over his head suspiciously. Fast forward to the next day and I'm at my grandparent's house. One of my grandfather's buddies is there visiting, so when I walk in he asks me, "Was that you and (friend's name) about to shoot that dummy deer yesterday???" I tried to play dumb, but he knew it was, so I confessed. He proceeded to tell me, "I shot the $%#$ thing and the game warden was writing me a ticket right then, and you two stupid sons a #$^@#$@ stop to shoot it too!" I told ol' Sammy to step out there and tell y'all dumb@$$es to get the #$@#$ out of there!!!" True story!!!

Road hunters are bold. I used to work with a guy who would tell you all about how to do it and not get caught. He had a car that had one of those middle seats that would fold down so you could access the trunk. His wife would drive and he would sit in the back. When they came up on a deer he wanted to shoot he would shoot out the back window throw the rifle in the back and get in the front seat. They would go home, wait a couple hours and then change vehicles. This time they would get in his truck and go pick up the deer. I don't know how many deer he killed this way but I am pretty sure it was a weekly thing for him.

Johnny's voice in the dark, "There aren't supposed to be any of us dragging him out!" This sounds like a story about my older brother. He was heck on wheels and every game warden in Covington Co was after him and his buddies. Them boys gave Thagard Colvin a hard time on Blue Springs WMA. I'm pretty sure they alone are responisble for getting 22 mag outlawed on WMA lands. I learned early in life what not to do as I saw all the trouble he and his buddies got into. My poor mother had to deal with all his trouble!! I promised her I would not put her through that a second time.

Fred thank you for all the great stories. I truly appreciate the job you did and the current GW are doing. There aren't nearly enough of you guys to do the amount of work that's required and asked. I make it a point to thank everyone I come in contact with. I wish I had the pleasure to meet more out in the field on a yearly basis.

As long as we're telling road hunting stories, I know most of you have probably never done it and the ones who have wont admit to it but as a teen me and my two friends did a lot of it. We were also selling the deer we killed to by more beer. I know some guys that still do it but that aint me anymore. It is a damn wonder we didn't hurt someone. The job the gw's do is deffinately dangerous especially with the decoy. Some may see it as entrappment but I say the ticket they get just may be what they needed to turn their life around. You never know, the next shot they fired from the road may have been the one that goes through someones house and kills someone. I'm sure the corp of engineers probably still has a file on me somewhere. They don't like it when you cut donuts around them and then outrun their little puke green jeep cherokee. They sent me a certified letter saying that if I even parked on the grass would be $1500 fine and that it would be in my best interest to stay away from corp property in the future. Closest I ever came to getting a fine or worse. I'm so glad the good Lord watched over me and turned my life around. As for my friends, one spent time in federal prison and was killed a few years ago in a car wreck. The other I haven't seen since I told him until he got the monkey off his back don't come back to my house begging for money or I'll shoot you.

Great stories! Thanks for taking the time to post them. Some of the replies surprised me at first, but then I got to thinking - a lot of those folks that shot the decoy probably read aldeer and are still kinda unhappy about you catching them.
