We set the decoy up one night in west Jeff Co, set in the truck across the road from the decoy. Truck pulled up, sat a minute, and as I got out to look , left. Same truck came back 45 minutes later and stopped at the decoy, half off the road, maybe 20 yards from the decoy. Just sat there, I got out o check on what they were doing....
Two drunks, saw the decoy and went and got a camera. They were taking pics of each other petting the deer. When I walked up one of em told me to be quiet and not scare the deer off. Did I say REAL drunk????? Off to jail we go........ Best story of all!

Great stories. Do you have some more with Taz you can throw in there? Taz passed on two years ago, just a few months shy of 15 years old. Best damn dog ever lived anywhere, anytime. She saved my butt a couple of times from getting hurt or having to kill someone. Tell ya what, I'll tell some Taz stories tomorrow night, got a few....

I have a friend with a big place in Clarke Co that had the wardens there set up on his place for a few nights and he had a lot of fun being on the scene with them. Best story was a young guy actually gets out and walks up to the decoy and shoots him with a bow. The wardens said that was a first.

I told yall newbies these stories are Aldeer Gold. I can imagine it being boring as shucks but when it goes down it goes from 0-60 real quick. Very exciting. I worked with Randy for 10yrs and he told me a few of those stories. Yall can believe everything Troy tells you guys, I knew his brother well and I can only imagine the times they had. He said it was fun as heck. He Said he would have kept going with you if his body wasn't so much beat up health wise. Like him did you go to the Military Academy as well? Not trying to be nosy just curious. You don't have to answer if you don't want to.
My old man and family and me when I was little turd hunted down in Wilcox county just outside of Camden. My dad and I got to be friends with this old fella and his wife that lived off an old dirt (county) road. The road Turned left off 41 and went a long way and would eventually come out on hwy 28. We called it the Old'man road. It was covered up with deer. You could ride that road at night and see hundreds just with your headlight. (It was legal back then) We'd stop by and drink coffee, eat and talk with them for hours. They enjoyed our company as much as we enjoyed theirs. The old man hated deer. When my dad asked him why he said because the outlaws shoot his house up when shooting them at night. Said he could care less about them shooting the deer bud stop shooting my damn house. As I would be playing around in the yard, I remember dad walking outside with the old guy. They started looking at the house so I walked over to see what they were doing. If there was 1 there was 1000 holes in the walls of his house. Mostly buck shot. He had a nice field in his front yard which held deer and guys shooting off the road at night could clearly see his house. You would think they would have some decency about not shooting up a mans house but if your an outlaw I guess you could care less. I can remember a couple times me and dad going by their and there'd be a doe in the front yard dead. Guess they got scared to go back and get it. We'd load it up and clean it. I guess killing a doe in a mans front yard wasnt worth risking going back to get it. Hard to believe some folks are that stupid.
If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.

I wasn't being cocky ya idiot. I was faster and better. I TAUGHT combat handgun shooting for the Dept. I KNEW I could take him...I just sure as hell didn't want to. I made 26 years without firing my gun at anyone and I'm proud of that. Couple of times I should of...and didn't. You have no idea what you're talking about.
So any time any LEO gets in a "I might have to shoot" situation the LEO shouldn't of tried to arrest a violator because the moron violator might just get stupid and "try" the officer???

Great tales.. there was story told several years ago about some ole boys road hunting around the Reserve in Brewton. It was told that Atchins was chasing some road hunters and they turned the spot light on him, blinding him with the one eyed beagle causing him to total his truck out. Ever hear of this story?

Sorry but I feel different about this than the rest of you guys.
All I have been hearing here is a situation set up by law enforcement with a high potential to get someone killed over a deer. Look at this statement in particular.I mean to tell you that boy scared the shucks out of me that day. I wasn't worried that he would shoot me, heck, I was bulletproof, faster, and better than he was. LOL I just knew he was going to make me shoot his stupid young ass.
What really scares and angers me here is the cocky attitude of the officer " I'm faster , better, and I might have to shoot his stupid ass." Seems like a perfect situation to kill a young boy that got set up, and all over a stinking deer. I don't see any way this is helping to prevent crime. All I see is a way to make money and endanger lives at the same time. Well, the kid CHOSE to break the law and then CHOSE to escalate the situation by not complying with the officers instructions. If he had been shot, it would have been a suicide because he CHOSE it.

By his logic LEOs should cease stopping cars for traffic offenses because that is when a lot of officer involved shootings occur. Someone gets shot over a silly DUI. The best defense I ever heard for the decoy was Rouleau (sp?) telling me about a man who shot the decoy with his young son in the truck and told the judge that "I knew it was a decoy deer, I was just trying to show my son it wasn't real".

One of my roommates at Auburn was on a date with a girl one night. A new road had just been finished not far from campus and the sides of the road had been planted. Everyone knew you could drive down that road after dark and see 40-50 deer every time. Well my roommate decided to take her to see the deer. So they started down the road and as they came to a curve and the headlights naturally went off the road there stood a really nice buck. They drove on past and the girl was all excited about the buck. So she begged him to turn around. He did and so when they got back to the curve there was the buck again. She asked him to stop so she could look at the deer. He did and then the head of the buck turned. He said that when it stopped it kind of jerked and he knew it was a decoy. He said it was at that point that all heck broke loose. Flashing lights and siren coming out of a nearby road looking like the start of a drag race. He said he just sat there with his hands on the steering wheel. The officer asked about weapons and my buddy told him there were none. The officer did not believe him and proceeded to go through the truck. After about 45 minutes of looking he relented that there were in fact no weapons and let them go with a warning. When that joker got home he was white as a sheet. That was the last time he took a girl to look at the deer on that road.

your posts seem to follow a predictable path.... anti law enforcement... Since you are so "not cocky" how about calming down and stop calling me an idiot. All you are doing is proving my point. Let me ask you this. Why is it illegal to shoot deer from the road? I assume it's because it's dangerous to innocent people either driving down the road or it could be close to houses and dangerous to them. If it's a dangerous situation, why is it perfectly OK for law enforcement to create this dangerous situation so they can fine people for doing it? I'm certainly not saying that you wanted to shoot that kid. What I am saying is that you shouldn't have an attitude that you are bullet proof, especially against high power rifles, and I'm saying that it's a dangerous attitude both for you and anyone else. Would you have felt completely justified shooting that kid that would never gotten into that situation if you hadn't intentionally created it?

Not the same at all! A DUI check stops people who are already breaking the law and endangering other motorists with no "help" from law enforcement. A decoy intentionally creates the dangerous situation that the law enforcement is supposedly trying to stop. For DUI to be the same they would have to plant full bottles of whisky along the road, possibly at stop signs with the intention to get drivers to drink them just so they could be stopped for drunk driving. How would you feel about that?

Fred, do the wardens control the decoy's movements, or is it just random? The reason I ask is, I was traveling Hale County 29 one night and as I rounded a curve, there was a nice buck standing close to the road edge. I stopped to see if this "deer" was going to run out in front of me. Then it's head turns and looks up the road from me. I think, "That's odd", figured he would look toward me. Anyway, the head turned again, looking across the road, and that's when I could see the joints in the neck.
