Troy, there's still a lot of deer down that road by the little cahaba. I have a buddy that has killed several really big deer on 50 acres they have between there and brook highland.
Seems like you have a pretty good one about chasing some poachers through liberty park? Oh yeah, I fergit em there were so many... Liberty Park. Got a call one night about a dead, shot deer in a front yard off Sicard Hollow Road. I told the caller, a friend to hide and watch the deer till I got there, maybe 15 minutes. David Mobley and I got there and backed up into a uncompleted house/garage right across the road from the dead deer. Mobley got out and crawled up in a concrete pipe maybe 30 yards from the deer. I called Liberty Park security and told em to stay off that road till I said different. A Bronco came by three er four times, stopped a couple of times and left. Looked like the number of folks in the Bronco changed at different passes. They finally came back, stopped and dropped the tailgate down. I was having to threaten Mobley to stay put till the deer was loaded Finally got it loaded and I unleashed Mobley, who was on them like a cat one a crippled rat!!!!! I pulled out and went bumper up with the Bronco, bailed and ordered the passenger out. I told him to get on the ground.... Long as I live I hope to never see this again....he jumped up and forward, full horizontal...and hit the ground with a loud thud. Heck, I thought he killed himself!!! About this time the Liberty Park security guard drove up and started running his mouth to the two nighthunters. I told him to leave a couple of times, finally threatened to put his stupid arse in jail if he didn't get off my scene. Story dosen't stop here.... IN the Bronco on the floor was ONE arrow. WE separated the three guys and questioned em at length....finally got out that one guy got out at the intersection across from the Elementary School...and was walking thru yards shooting at deer!!!! I took my dog Taz to the intersection and told her to "Find"..she took off up the road, crossed Sicard Hollow and lay down. She was laying on the bow. Sent her again and 50 yards down the road she lay down again, on a matching arrow to the one in the Bronco. Bingo!!!!

We went to Montgomery with our records to talk Montgomery into buying every county a decoy, a total of just over $35,000 at that time. We made almost that much in ONE county in one season.
All the office could say was "do you know how much that would cost??"
Well yes, I just told you $35,000......
repeat the last two sentences about ten times.....
I finally said I'd buy a decoy for each county. They wanted to know where I'd get the money??? WTH??? I said I'd get it, but I wanted 1/2 of the fine money collected. Hail no they wouldn't agree to that grin grin Finallly gave up on selling the decoy idea to Montgomery....
Do ya'll know anyone who would turn down an investment like that in the private sector????? Spend $1100 and get back $30,000 in four months????
Damn shortsighted folks... You would be surprised how hard simple is on some folks

We set the decoy up one night in west Jeff Co, set in the truck across the road from the decoy. Truck pulled up, sat a minute, and as I got out to look , left. Same truck came back 45 minutes later and stopped at the decoy, half off the road, maybe 20 yards from the decoy. Just sat there, I got out o check on what they were doing....
Two drunks, saw the decoy and went and got a camera. They were taking pics of each other petting the deer. When I walked up one of em told me to be quiet and not scare the deer off. Did I say REAL drunk????? Off to jail we go........

We set up one night, with me on the ground across from the decoy, pretty close. Truck slows, goes on and turns around, passes and turns around again. Finally stops. driver gets out and tries to get gun out from behind the truck seat.
Pay attention here....he tells his wife to "get her fat ass out of the way"....and grabbed the rifle, jamming shells into it. He takes too long, a couple of cars come by, he hesitates, finally smells a little of the rat. I step out and tell him to put the gun down. I get the gun and it is unloaded, no shells anywhere. I KNOW I saw him load it. I ask him where the shells are, says he dosen't have any for it....
Pay back....wife says he threw em under the floor mat of the truck. LOL NEVER, EVER, SAY FAT AND ASS IN THE SAME SENTENCE TO YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND.....

I finally show him the video of him plainly loading the gun and tell him if he says that again I'm going to hit him in the mouth. Anyone ever take a shot, beat your ass, challenge you, etc., after you went all Mike Tyson on 'em? Now and then, some folks will try.

These might be some of the best stories I've ever heard. The drunks petting the deer almost put me on the ground from laughter.

Ask those Officers I taught how it went putting a hand on me... Well, I'm sure the ones who didn't talk nicely and offer a beer first probably didn't fare well.

one more... We set up in an area called Rattlesnake, Walker/Jeff line. Put the decoys(2) on a powerline 250 yards off the dirt road. I set up to video across the road and above it. Pretty soon here comes 5-6 trucks, dog hunters we had gotten complaints on. First truck sees the decoys as he comes up the hill(note HILL) and opens the door and jumps out, truck in gear. He starts shooting as the truck rolls backward into the second truck, whose driver is out and now shooting. Third truck driver is also out and shooting....Holy smokes Batman....starting to look like an Interstate wreck with guns.... Richard comes flying up and we sort em out. All they want to know is if they hit the decoy, we have to take em out there to check for fresh holes...

Great thread Fred! Keep the stories coming.
So here's a question: How is setting up a decoy not some form of entrapment or baiting a hunter to break a law? I know what the hunter is doing is illegal, but it just seems like entrapment. Entrapment is defined as an inducement by a law enforcement officer which causes someone to do an act that they normally wouldn't do. The key phrase in this case is "normally wouldn't do." The fact that they shot pretty much kills their defense that they wouldn't have shot if it was a real deer.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

the one that scared me.....
Set up in Rattlesnake again. Decoy to the left on a powerline, me hiding just off the road to the right in camo. Richard maybe 1/4 mile up the road in chase vehicle. Truck pulls up and shoots, racing off quickly. Richard wouldn't answer, he was talking to someone WHO HAD HIM BLOCKED IN. WTH???? He finally gets out and takes off after the guy....
Another truck stops before Richard comes back, two guys get out with guns. Passenger looks 16 er so, leans across truck and shoots. I step out, shedding my camo and tell him to put the gun on the ground as I walk towards him.
At ten steps he still hasn't put the gun down. I tell him in my best LOUD voice to put the gun down. He looks at the driver(his older brother it turns out). I pull my 40 cal and tell him again to put it down. He looks to the other guy(brother) and starts to turn towards me, gun in hand.
I mean to tell you that boy scared the shit out of me that day. I wasn't worried that he would shoot me, heck, I was bulletproof, faster, and better than he was. LOL I just knew he was going to make me shoot his stupid young ass. As I leveled to fire his brother finally saw where it was headed and screamed for him to put the gun down. He did. I didn't want to shoot a 16 year old kid, but I sure as all getout wasn't going to take a bullet to show I wouldn't....
I got em wrote up and off down the road. Took a while to regain my composure, that kid SCARED me.....
I was in Winn Dixie many years later, in uniform, and a fella approached me and asked if I remembered him? It was the older brother from that day. I told him his younger brother scared me worse than I have ever been before or since. He thanked me for not shooting.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

Troy, was the kid nervous/scared or just cold-blooded?
