I've gotten some friends in LE and have called them to see if they can run a serial number for me. They all work for different departments and all told me that they had strict policies against running them unless I brought the firearm to the dept. 15yrs ago when I was working for a PD as a dispatcher, it was no problem to run a serial number. Of course it was me running the numbers. I think that NCIC has cracked down on running that type of info. Having said that if the guy is legit, he should have no problem meeting you at a PD to have it ran.

Also back when I was working there, the serial numbers on stolen firearms was only kept in the system for 3yrs. Not sure if that's changed or not.

It's not worth the risk of losing your money at a minimum. If you weren't charged with a crime the police can still take the firearm due to it being stolen and you will be out of the money you paid for it.

I see you are in Florida , therefore I have no idea what florida law is .

So you are saying there is NO way to legally run the numbers on a gun you want to purchase?..... I have had guns I've purchased from gunshows etc by ffl dealers gun shops, pawnshops etc.. it can be done

Yes that is what I am saying . The information came from the county sheriff and a good friend that is a ffl dealer.

I bought a gun a couple of years ago from a guy my brother in law worked with , he got the gun from his brother in law and would not give me a bill of sale . I asked a friend (police officer ) to run the numbers and he told me he could not it was against the law . I then called a friend that is a ffl and he said he had no legal way to run the numbers ,I then called the sheriff (pike and Crenshaw county ) and was told by both there was no legal way to check the numbers .

If I am wrong I apologize , however, the information I posted came from 1 ffl dealer 1 police officer and 2 county sheriff's all of which are friends and have no reason not to check the firearm if it were legal .

They can be checked but the LEO needs to have it in their possession or be able to lay hands on it. If it comes back with a hit then they need names and who has it.

Go with your gut on this one man. I know if I need money I will sell stuff dirt cheap also just what I have to do at that time.

Like stated before if it is stolen then LEO's if you are ever caught with the gun will take it and want the name of the person you got it from. If he is not willing to give you a bill of sale and maybe even meet in front of Police station then I would head the other way.

I would want to know how many he has. If it is just a couple of different ones then it might be ok. I have been in situations where I needed money and have sold stuff so cheap that someone might have thought it was stolen but I needed the money quick and didn't have time to wait for top dollar so I priced it to go quick.

Tell the guy to give you the guns number over the phone so you can run it. If he wont then you probably have your answer and haven't left your chair or spent any money.
