My youngest son ( 18 ) tripped over a disc and cut his pinky finger , went to Grovehill emergency and received 4 stitches . The bill came to the house today $ 1029 billed to BCBS and they payed $650 the hospital wrote off the rest I guess . I don't know how they can justify this cost ? $ 250 per stitch and a numbing shot . Obama care at it's finest

That's not necessarily a side effect of Obamacare, ER charges have always been ridiculous.

Urgent cares are they way to go nowadays if you can. It's usually a single upfront fee and everything they do is covered. The one I use is $155 and they've done X-rays and blood work in one visit before.
At times my ambition far exceeds my talent.

I went to the ER years back after a car wreck. My wife needed care so they saw me as well. A two minute conversation and a tylenol later resulted in nearly $600. That bill was on the other drivers insurance company

They charge that to make up for all the people that don't pay. This is the answer you're looking for.

The reason for the discrepancy between what the hospital charges and what insurance pays is due to contracts. BCBS and other insurers work out deals with providers (hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, etc) that they will pay "x" amount for each procedure, and the provider agrees to accept "x" amount for that procedure. Works out good for the insurer because it's a lesser amount they'll have to pay. Works out good for the provider because they're assured of of getting paid the agreed upon amount on time.

THIS^^^^^^^ I have PET Scans every 6 months and the Bill is between $14,000.00 and $16,000,00 but BCBS pays just over $3000.00. My cost is $50.00 unless I have already met my yearly out of pocket of $3000.00, then it is zero. What puzzles me is why there are differing amounts charged to BCBS when, to my knowledge, they are all exactly the same PET Scan.

Rant over ! I have no affiliation with the hospital here, but if you feel you have been ripped off just wrap some duct tape on it and take your azz back home. You may also want to try the deer hunting in Fairhope, I hear it's real nice.

Works out good for the insurer because it's a lesser amount they'll have to pay. Works out good for the provider because they're assured of of getting paid the agreed upon amount on time. The problem is, especially in Alabama, it is about as "win/win" as having the mob offer your business "protection." I've been managing a medical collection agency for about 13 years and here is what I see every day... Alabama’s largest insurer is BCBS of AL. If you are NOT a BCBS participating provider, you better be doing relatively cheap procedures that you can collect in cash (such as Urgent Care facilities) or be a primarily Medicaid/Medicare clinic. If you don’t fit into one of those niches, you won’t be around too long. So, once you admit that you are at the mercy of BCBS pricing, you have to adjust your charges higher to get back the return that you need/expect to continue operations. That means the procedure that you once did for $100 must now be a $333 procedure for the doctor to make the same $100 (assuming BCBS will pay you 30% of the bill). While this means nothing to the guy with BCBS, it means an additional $233 to the poor sucker who didn’t have insurance. And guess what? That additional $233 takes a lot of people out of the “able to pay” category and pushes them into the pit of “unable to pay”… increasing the number of people who don’t pay… which makes the medical provider have to raise their prices again to make up that difference… which causes more people to not be able to pay… and so on.
