As I posted, the wire haired wiener dogs found the deer. The deer ran out of the plot and circled hard to the right back to where he was likely bedded. We found him in a creek. The yotes had eaten nearly every useful amount of meat off the deer. The shot was a little too low. It hit the shoulder at the top of the leg bone and passed through the lower part of his chest. If the shot would have been an inch higher the heart would have probably been blown to pieces and there would have been a huge blood trail. I can't tell if the heart was hit because it was gone, along with the TL's, back hindquarters, ribs, liver and all the intestines. We've got a severe yote problem. Many, many thanks to Tom and his wife Jackie. (I hope I got that right) They seem like great people and their dogs are fantastic. They saved me hours and hours of walking and looking.

Thanks everybody. Looks like a trip to the taxidermist. We fixin to load up and head to West Blocton, Alabamy. Gonna meet Charles and let him do the taxidermy on my daughters first buck. This deer means so much to me. Not only was I able to be there when my daughter killed her first deer, but I have spent countless hours and dollars on our place trying to make it a small whitetail haven. There are so many small farms around here that there are hunters every 40 acres. One thing's for sure, this deer has eaten well his entire life. I figure he's a 3 year old, but he could be 4. If he's a 3 year old he's been eating alfalfa his entire life. If he's 4 years old then he ate soybeans his first year, then got alfalfa the next. I know he's not a Boone and Crockett but he's bigger than he would have been if I hadn't planted year round food plots on ground that has been limed, and limed and limed and fertilized. This is the first rack buck that's been taken (that I know of, did I mention that I have prosecuted tresspassers caught on our place) on our farm since my parents bought the new part 6-8 years ago. We have 120 acres here and it's pretty much a sanctuary. Now I do have to do something about the yotes. Anyone who has night vision optics and wants a place to coyote hunt, just let me know come February. I will get the permit. You can come anytime deer season is not in, but I'm going with you if you're here.

That is the puppy. He found the deer. I guess both dogs found it.
