Herniated L5, had it done in '95. Was active duty.Surgery was at Maxwell AFB. During examinations Dr told me to either get it done now while on AD or she'd see me in the VA. Non combat related MOS so I was able to recover but still they gave me hell. Told me to either get back on full duty or medical board even though the surgeon had me on light/part time duty for 6 months. Was a nasty fight but was finally able to retire. Completely destroyed any positive attitudes I had about the military. My suggestion - wait about a year before retirement, get it done if you have to, them put in retirement papers. You're done as far as they are concerned anyway.
