Go rent a blower from home depot and lowes, buy the amount of insulation they make u buy for the package deal, save your receipt and take back what you dont use.Dont do the edges above the soffet, it has to breath. I think mine is around 10-12" deep

WHAT ABOUT BLOWING IT IN AN ATTIC IN A MOBILE HOME WITH NOT ATTIC ACCESS, HOW WOULD THAT BE ACCOMPLISHED?

Two layers of R19, one running with the joist the other across them. Makes it a pretty air tight R38. Not a specialist, but I slept in a house with R38 overhead last night. wink

I've got blown in cellulose. Our power bill is considerably less in our 2300 sq ft custom home than it was the 1700 sq ft spec built house we lived in prior to this.

If you get cellulose in your attic, go through and mark lines on the braces or trusses where the agreed depth of insulation is supposed to be. If the insulation isn't up to the marks, make em come back.

Also, if you go with blown in cellulose, get them to spray water on top of it after it's blown in. It will activate the glue on top, making it form a crust which will keep it from blowing away from the ventilated areas of your soffit.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

I would build a "shed" over it to keep it in the shade or put a layer of foam (4x8 sheet) down then a layer of tin. Saw this done on a diy show a month or two ago.

No way I'd do it myself. Get them to come do it for you in 30 minutes. I paid $600 for my little house and well worth it. Also save your receipt, it's partially tax deductible.

Be careful with cellulose, if it gets wet and damp it can grow mold. Shoot for an R-30 or higher. If your close to Baldwin county I would be glad to talk to you. I own an insulation business.

You could open up the gable ends and blow it in through there.

No way I would do it myself. I'm all about saving a dime but I think the insulation companies do it cheaper than you can do it yourself.

And if it's a shingle roof, you could remove a section of decking towards the middle to access that area. Fresh shingles on that spot may not match exactly due to weathering of the old shingles.

Helped a buddy do his house. Saved him $1500 labor cost.

It's been a while since I built a house but back then you could have someone come blow it cheaper than you could buy the insulation. You also want to look real good at the whole attic before you pay them. I've seen a few that look real pretty around the access and nothing once you get out of eyesight.

Ran a insulation co. for 15 yrs. but not an expert.
Pay to have it done. Do as mention earlier an mark how deep they are suppose to insulate. If y can afford have r-30 batts installed. If you cannot see your rafters then likely you will not see much of a power bill difference if you add more insulation.

I assume this is not a new construction. Lots of folks have blown in stuff put in even new constructions, if the newer stuff isn't any better than what was out say 15-20 years ago I'd roll some R19, 24" unfaced, pink panther across the joist, assuming you already have some insulation. The older blown in stuff would settle bad , 12" would turn into 6-8 in a few years. It's not a bad job, just wear a mask.

All that other stuff is ok, but get someone to spray CLOSED cell spray foam in. It's the best period. We still haven't ran the AC this year. By the afternoons when it has hit the mid 80's, it is still about 73 in my house.
