Not an expert...been chasing the damn things 35 years though...On REALLLLLLY cold mornings especially, our deer down South dont move well...but a sunny cutover where they can get out of the wind and the morning sun hit them is a good bet Our deer are fat, and in most cases well fed...They have no immediate need to move when its that cold, they expend more energy staying warm than they get...as in calories...They, in my experience hunker down somewhat till it passes...BUT, its rutting behavior now...Bucks will be up moving whatever the weather...killed my biggest on a powerline in 20mph wind and 20 degrees in mid January...

On Tuesday of next week it is supposed to be in the 20s for a high. What is some of your past history on hunting days this cold? Thinking about sitting on a big food plot all day. The rut is close where I am at. If you have any clearcut land with a good-sized slope facing south, find ways to hunt it. In the am, see if you can find a road inside the cut they have to cross to get to that area... in the pm, look for the most available food source (food plot in the cutover, acorns adjacent to it, etc.) near it and look for activity earlier than usual that afternoon.

I Have always noticed our deer here in the black belt don't move good till that thermo hits 30 degrees. They just don't have those nice fur jackets they have up north I reckon. Even then a nice sunny spot for them and me to get warm in.

Have to agree with the sunny side of a cut-over hill, out of the wind is a great place to hunt on an extremely cold morning.

From the look of the shadows, you are on the sunny side of a hill on a cut over....just saying.
