Definitely keep his head, feet and neck warm. Wool socks, like the SmartWool or Thor-lo, and good gloves and toque should help. A fleece neck gaiter also is a good idea. I ran across this stuff -- Ice Armor -- when I was in Wisconsin. It's designed for those crazy idots who sit on buckets ice fishing up north. I bought the toque beanie for $16 and it's like a double fleece with a windblocker lining or something. Warmest thing I've ever owned. There's no way you could walk with it on to a stand in Bama but it would be great for sitting. Ice Armor also makes a cap with a neck gaiter and face shield sewn in, along with gloves and parkas, bibs, etc. http://clamoutdoors.com/ice_armor

Helps with the older folks too (in response to hand/feet warmers)

Done that for my son when the highs are not that high, but most days I just carry a small camo polartec-like blanket for him. Keeps him warm, it is light, quiet, and he can pull it up over his head and play games on his ipod which keeps him content, still, and quiet.

Sleeping bag!!! My girlfriend loves em, pull them up under your arm pits and she read her kindle....anyway, we left it in a blind bc we planned on hunting there that evening, long story short, forgot it. I went back a week later when it was in the 13-15 degree range and figured since it was there..........warmest below 20 degree hunt I've ever had
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

The hand and foot warmers work well with the youngsters and they are fairly inexpensive. Helps them deal with cold a little longer than normal IMO. I buy them by the case for my 10 year old daughter. Sock hat, neck gaitor, one of those around your waist hand muff things and a camo blanket.

A neck/head gator will work wonders. Thermocell has some foot warmers out this year that should help as well. I know my wife has already been busting my chops to get her some.

Sleeping bag. Cheap, they don't outgrow it, and works like a charm.
