http://www.reporterherald.com/columnists/homewaters/ci_21684278/hunt-records-may-destroy-huntingI especially liked (and agree with) the section that reads: " ...I've never been a fan of hunting contests, big rack tournaments, "tape-measure" hunting or other similar, gratuitous hunting events. They create a horribly distorted and incredibly destructive image of what traditional, fair chase hunting and game conservation is all about.
Killing animals for fame, fortune, celebrity status, bogus awards and meaningless titles... portrays us and what we do in the worst possible light to the millions of non-hunters who have little understanding of what our legitimate purpose is or what our responsibilities to our game herds and flocks are. It's evident from the number of hunting competitions, high-dollar canned hunts and closed-fence trophy hunts these days that a lot of hunters have lost sight of it too.
Hunting isn't, nor should it be, about ego-gratification, score keeping and phony, grandiose titles. Taking a representative big buck or bull for a personal wall mount and utilizing all of the meat is a time-honored tradition, but shooting animals for cash prizes or hollow recognition and then trying to convince the rest of the world that we hold our game animals in the highest regard reeks of the same kind of hypocrisy animal-rights groups practice."

Some good points were made in that article. Here's some more good reading that is the basis of my idea of hunting: 24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so.
25 And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.
30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. The Holy Bible, Genesis Chapter 1 I deserve no credit for God's Creation. I'm honored to have been given dominion over it... and I join God in praising His work when I have the opportunity to share it. All I can think of to say when I see His Creation is: "It is indeed very good!!"

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.
My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

No, I don't collect them. I just have a little Brno 7x57 that I'm really fond of... full stock, butterknife bolt, set triggers, shoots straight...

BSK, I wonder if you'd be kind enough to tell me how you came upon this column. I know my local newspaper publishes on-line for local subscribers, but I'm curious to know how a deer hunter in Nashville, TN, stumble on an outdoor column from a small town newspaper in Colorado? Thanks again for your support. It was linked on another hunting forum, www.tndeer.com. I'll ask the original poster how they found the column. And by the way, the fight against "trophyism," which in my opinion is ruining hunting, is a major endeavor of mine.

Hey, Thanks for the info. I'm intrigued by how this little column has covered so much territitory in such a short time.
The obsession with monster racks has been kind of a curiosity to me ever since I was a kid, but it's gotten to the point where it seems to drive some guys to ego-manical extremes - and an increase in poaching (at least around here). People - I don't consider them hunters for obvious reasons - are killing big elk, taking the heads and capes and leaving the bodies to rot, then making up some BS story about how they shot a booner or some such. Not good.
The constant publication and TV broadcsting of "another world record" this or that makes things difficult for those of us who are trying to teach our kids and grandkids what ethical, traditional fair-chase hunting is really about. Many of them watch that stuff on TV and think they gotta bag a 180 buck or they aren't "real" hunters. It's the old "fastest gun in the west" complex all over again. Or maybe just another manifestation of penis envy. Whatever it is, it's sending a poor message to the non-hunting public and in the end, their votes outnumber ours.
It ain't the arrow; it's the Indian.

Eddie,
Sure. Glad to help.
The day after my column was published in the Loveland Reporter-Herald, I received an e-mail from Jeff Dute, an outdoors reporter for the Alabama Press-Register (in Mobile, I believe). He just wanted to say he was in agreement with my concern, and invited me to hunt or fish with him if I ever found myself in Alabama.
I was kind of stunned. I often get commentary from locals regarding my columns, but Alabama?? I was intrigued.
So I returned his e-mail to thank him for his kind words of support, and asked how he happened across my Colorado column in AL. He directed me to this forum. I've sinced learned it came to Aldeer.com from another deer hunting forum in Tenessee. Now I want to find out how it popped up there. Ya gotta love the Internet, eh?
I'm glad to see that others are as concerned as I am about this issue. I was beginning to think maybe I was crazy - or just an old curmudgeon. And maybe I am, but apparently I'm not alone.
Best, Dennis
