Does anyone offer a rifle chambered In 338 federal anymore. Seems that would be a great deer killer but for some reason really took off. I was looking for one but cannot find anyone still making them.

I've been looking for one for a while now with no luck. Savage use to chamber it in a model 11. The easy thing to do would be to get a prefit barrel on a tikka but I hate tikka rifles.

6 of them listed on GunBroker right now.

Ammo is starting to be seen again also.

Problem with cartridge is bullets designed for.338 are are not intended for such slow velocity .imo
You would need to be cautious and thoughtful of your bullet selection

Really 308,358 win,338-06 better all the way

I'd probably only shoot the lightweight 160gr Barnes or thin jacketed cup core lightweight cheap bullets in 338 federal

Just shoot 308 nothing will know the deference except you'll probably have quicker kills

.338 shoots about same speed as 308. Pretty close to the same trajectory, But with significantly bigger bullet. I find that appealing.

Pretty interesting chart. I’d like to run the #’s myself on a few to see how accurate it is but assuming it’s correct data…wow. Makes me wonder if I shoulda gone a different direction with my 358Win build last year.

I traded a NF scope for an old Sako in .338 Win and looking at that chart I’m really glad I made the trade. I had a Weatherby Mk V I bought in .300 Weatherby mag for an Elk hunt I want to take one day. I wonder if the .338 would be a suitable switch out for it. May need to sell the Wby.

I don't think there has ever been an Elk walked this earth that a 300 WBY wouldn't knock it's pecker in the dirt with enough authority to impress the most seasoned Elk Hunter.

But .338 Win Mag is certainly a good choice on Elk. I've shot a couple with one. I didn't have to look for them. Shooting a 250 grain.

.338 Federal is pretty good just some of the .338 bullets at the higher weights are meant for the Win Mag's velocities. Something to watch out for. The heavy .35's are show stoppers on whatever you can hit doesn't matter.

I like the .35's terminal performance better myself in the 200-225 grain camp but you'll go back and forth on all these forever splitting hairs. Same with racing engines..... there is no replacement for displacement. When you are ready to get serious there is a different answer. .338 Win Mag and .340 Weatherby.

.338 Federal in a compact rifle would make a good deer rifle but really when I think about these I think about Black Bear being on the menu or something built a little thicker than a Whitetail. Same w/ 358's. They shine on whitetails as sort of a brush gun in that regard. Work great on bigger mid-western deer.

180-200 grain from a .30-06 would do about the same in the end. So there's that.
