The wife and I were on our afternoon ride around and were putting along down about a 30’ wide shooting lane between two plots bordered by 30’ high planted pines. A hawk flew out in right in front of us from a limb low in the tree canopy which I thought was a little strange. As soon as it got gone it looked like a turkey grenade went off about 10’ from the side of the buggy. Mama jumps up and does the” I am hurt follow me “ routine and over a dozen fist size poults head to the trees through the grass. I obviously interrupted a battle between a hungry hawk and protective mom. Glad I could help out mom.

Hawks are getting overpopulated since fewer people keep chickens. They kill some poults for sure.

They kill more than any other predator.

Hawks are way tougher on turkeys and small game than most realize.
We let our chickens out yesterday afternoon. Within 15 minutes a hawk was circling low over our house.

There needs to be a regulated harvest.

Long ago in the 60's through the 70's when I was a young shaver....ALL Quail hunters would kill hawks whenever they got the chance....PERIOD! I even know a Farmer back then who killed a Golden Eagle in Dallas County because if kept hanging around an old homeplace where he knew a Covey of Quail stayed. I .243 them now.....it's GOOD Sniping practice....POOOOOF Feathers....they gone!

We have a good bit of owls and apparently they are really rough on em. But I’m sure they put a hurting on the poults too. [Linked Image][Linked Image]

Saw a hawk carrying a snake today. Maybe it'll keep him full for a while and not too hungry for poult.

It's a problem when our state DCNR invest more time and money in Eagles..Hawks...ospreys...snakes...bats....

I don't know if a turkey is even on the list with the state anymore.

I think Cooper’s hawks and owls are the biggest turkey predators. At least the owl they will eat other turkey predators, the cooper just focuses on birds
