I haven't tagged one yet this season with 13 days left. I'm debating if I should start putting out a single hen decoy. What's Aldeer thoughts on this and I switched to an aluminum pot call to get the sound out further and add a different tone.

Ditch the hen. Use a 1/4 or half strut Jake right now. This late in the season if I am forced to use a decoy that has proven to be the most successful.

I never use them because I can’t stand toting extra stuff. Now the last 2 I sat down on a misfire and a miss I do belive they would have helped gave him something to look at instead popping up in range and not seeing a hen

Do what you want to do.. killed them with them and haven’t killed with them… if your situation calls for it, go for it.

this *unless* you know for a fact you’re dealing with an extreme subordinate gobbler - years ago i shot a bird in a road bed over a hen decoy on the last day of season, but he was definitely subordinate & had a skinny jake buddy with him

with decoys, you have to know if your birds are lovers or fighters lol

No decoys. There are a good many jakes shutting down gobbling in areas. I’ve had as much bad luck as good with a single hen.

We found a pasture gobbler at a buddies farm that would make his way to a blacktop driveway in the middle of the pasture and strut and gobble there on the blacktop until his hens came. We would not see him coming there he would just appear there.

We set up before good light and put out a hen in the strut zone.

That SOB pitched off a the top of hardwood ridge 300 yards away and sailed straight over the farmhouse right down the driveway and landed 80 yards from us.

They can work in the right situation but they can also booger you.

I will use decoys on field birds. Mostly use a hen and a 3/4 strut jake. Have seen them spook birds and had them come running to them. In the fields, I put them out in the dark and try to kill the gobbler straight off the roost. Seems to work better than the invisible hen on the edge of the field. Never use them in the woods.

Never use them, learned to hunt without them so kinda feels wrong to me.
