The spur is a general guide line but not an exact. The way the old timers use to age them appears to be pretty accurate to me off spur length. Jakes that hav been captured amd released 4 years later had very similar spur lengths but not exact - but fairly close

Beard length has 0 to do with it - a absolute stud can hav beard rot and hav nothing and a longer legged bird has better chance at longer beard - will not wear as easy - some young birds can hav a massive beard

Hunt the wind - leave it better than you found it - love your neighbor as you love your self

That was possible before corn was allowed and dog trackers got involved. Won’t work with today’s birds. Corn causes (bone spurs) false counting.
Tracking dogs run everything out of the woods and turkeys running changes the bone density. I have a chart from studies nation wide I’ll look it up and post it.

All I care about is if he has a full fan and acting like the man!

I’ll take the gang of 2year olds!

You got that right. If he has a full fan and comes to the call he is old enough!

Sway back, low hanging belly and brisket, sagging skin and kinda walks with a limp says he’s old. Oh wait!! I thought you wanted how to age this turkey hunter!!

Would I be far off in saying that after the 1st year (Jake), a Gobbler grows a 1/4 inch of spur a year?...

1. Jake 0-1/2"
2. 2 yr. old 3/4"
3. 3 yr. old 1"
4. 4 yr. old 1 1/4"
5. 5 yr. old and older 1 1/2 - plus

From what I understand there are too many variables to use the spur length to judge a turkeys age. Similar to judging whitetails based on tooth wear.

Man hunting was so much more fun before everybody had to assign age and scores to everything

If he causes me an hour of hill climbing and swamp wading, gobbling like a man, I don’t care if he has a fan at all….
