How many of yall have ancestors that were alive during early 20th century, especially prohibition, who smoked a pipe everyday?

If so, do you have a sneaking suspicion of what they were actually smoking? (Tobacco is not an acceptable answer to this question grin)

My grandfather, GGfather and his father grew hemp and produced rope along the Mobile to N.O. coast for the shipping industry. I'm sure there was a patch or two of the fun stuff being grown in their regular rope stock. But those folks also had access to Caribbean rum which was swapped for practical daily goods by sailors during prohibition. A bottle of rum was worth a weeks food and shelter during prohibition and was regular currency for a lot of Gulf coast folks back then.

My granny talked about her family growing poppy. She mentioned having fell asleep by some poppys when she was akid and her parents had a really hard time waking her up. She never mentioned them using the poppy to make medicine. But i could tell by the way she was talking about it, that poppy was the same kind you get in trouble for growing now.

You can grow the heroin poppy in your flower garden legally. Its the same plant as the poppy seeds on bread which is why a poppy seed bun can make you test positive on a drug test. A lot of people grow them for decoration. I think it takes about a full acre of them to be turned into a usable amount of the hard drug and its a labor intensive process.

Amazing what you learn on this site - I had no idea they were the same.

Everyone will also learn soon enough that HEMP and CANNABIS are the same thing. Kinda like a Labrador and German shepherd are the same species...just a different breed

The Farm Bill 2018 and the .3 designation distinguishing hemp from cannabis is a legal fiction.

Most laws are legal fiction lol Maybe genetically similar but very very different plants. More apt description would be a chihuahua and a pit bull if we are going for a canine comparison. Same species but otherwise few similarities.

I’ve got tons of the stuff not in Alabama. The market was so saturated a few years ago you can barely give the stuff away

I was told alot of those old timers going out "fox hunting" all night were actually sitting out in the woods drinking moonshine, the fox race was secondary and not necessary at all. The women and the church frowned on the drinking but the men were quite fond of it.

Check out “Hemp for Victory “. WWII documentary. The US government was in the hemp business big time.

Reminds me of my dad telling that his dad was a rough ole hillbilly and never understood what his mom saw in him. She was from money and worldly. lol. Said she polished his dad up some but he still had a little wild streak. I barely remember them since I was young when they died.

Fits in with what you’re saying.

Can't imagine what a bunch of you would say when a pack of fox hounds run across your lease. I got to go once or twice with some friends of my Dads. Build a fire, set around drinking coffee with maybe a little something else, listening to dogs run and being able to tell who's whose what by the sound of their voice. Nobody cared whose land it was as long as there was a good race. Simpler time back then.

Trying to find the dogs were what we used to live for. Run those dirt roads and pull out the transponder every now and then, dog boxes full of cold beer and the cab full of outlaw women
