Is anyone using Egyptian wheat as a food plot or access screens?
If so, how do they hold up through the season. Anyone got a recent picture during late winter?

I looked into it a couple years ago. Following this thread for pics too.

I don't have any pics, but we used it years ago. Plant several rows too last through the season.

It will break down through the season, so several rows will work. Helped alot.

I'll try to remember to take a picture this weekend. I planted some for cover in a dove field and it works great for that. I was really surprised by the amount of grain that it produced. The deer knocked a good bit of it down when eating the grain, but a lot of stalks are still standing.

When do you have to plant in order for it to be ready for hunting season? Do you just disc, spread and cover or what’s the best way to plant? Newbie here trying to learn. Thanks for any help and/or advice.

Seems like I planted mine in May last year. And like others have said plant multiple rows for best results. Like Poor Country Preacher, I utilized mine in a Dove Field as well, and it worked really well for that. I also found that the Deer would Bed down in it also. Obviously it doesn’t look as good now as it did at start of season, but if you plant it wide enough, I think you’ll be happy. Good Luck. 👍

I planted Egyptian wheat and teosinte side by side as a screen cover. Note that my intent was not for deer feed.

The EW did well. In fact, better than any other thing I had tried up until that point. Same as other crops that you don’t plant it thick so it can grow a good support system and it will stay standing. The leaves do dry up but typically don’t fall off at a rapid rate. Planted about 15 feet wide it will suffice.

For the teosinte (small eared maize type corn) it will grow very small ears. I did not add another crop with it as I did not want the deer to utilize it heavy. The stalks grew about ten feet tall and very thick leaves. The leaves do not fall off. Picture large field corn with very sturdy stalks without any large ears of corn. The only downfall is the amount of birds that utilize the patch when you are hunting. It is constant as there is seed everywhere. However, the birds have not weighed down the stalks and broke them at all. Send me a PM with your number and I will send you a picture of what a late patch of it looks like.

a lower planting rate remains standing longer than a heavy in my opinion as well. adding in other 3-5’ plants helped as well like sorghum, corn and sunflowers

Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers..........

Planted EW light disk seeded then drag harrow from a ball field over it. Did great ours was 30 or so ft wide. Held up good all winter. After planting Try to catch a rain kinda quick the seed will be eaten by birds. Wanting try the teosinte corn this year.will also do some EW.

Wonder if anyone has attempted to use sun hemp for the same purpose as the wheat. Seems like that could be dual purpose, and from what I know about hemp more hardy.

They have used it. Some said they had good success , with others the deer kept it mowed down. I fell into the later .
