if the rifle is accurate - as in 1.5" or better at 100 yards - it is a near 200 yard hunting rifle with a nice little scope and good skills. sight in the 150s at 3" high at 100, and it is good to 200 - if you're that good. lever marlins and winchesters need a bit of tuning to achieve that kind of accuracy. otherwise, 100 yard limit ...

They are the old ones. That’s what’s left off the box that I bought when I bought that 30-30 for dad almost 25yrs ago.

My son shot his first and only deer with 150 gr coreloc. About 50 yards and dropped in 20 about yards.

I’ve killed a pile with a 30/30 and fixed 4x scope. 150 or 170’s doesn’t matter, but I have had better pass through results with 170’s. I like Remington core lokts and the federal fusions. The most difficult part about getting a lever gun to shoot accurately is the trigger. The triggers on the old lever guns can be pretty stiff but break cleanly. I use mine for woods hunting.

Ive shot some nice groups with 170s out of a marlin 336 at 200 yd talledega range.
By nice I mean 5 or 6inch groups. Good enough to kill any deer at 200.
You do have to go a bit high on zero. I believe i have mine at 2.5 or 3 inches high at 100.

I never really had a Matlin or winchester that shot bad . Best I remember I had one that shot little
More than 2inch group one time at a 100 . Knowing me at the time I might have had mixed shells in the gun

I’ve always had good luck with 150 grain Winchester power points. My little girl has killed 2 with the Managed recoil Remington 125 grain CLs this year.

Killed a bunch with a Marlin. I once killed a coyote at 225 steps with mine in a big field.

I can hit the metal plate target at 100yds with my Marlin iron sighted. As good as I could ever hope for deer hunting. I'm always sitting in the woods. I rarely have any need to shoot at something over 100 yds.

Only reason I put a scope on mine was because of low light . . I had see thru scope mounts

I've killed 50+ with corelokt 150's. I've lost 2 deer and looking back both was my own fault...

I have a Marlin 336 my parents gave me 45 years ago, can’t remember ever using anything but 150 core lokt and 160 lever revolution.
I can’t remember how many deer my family’s kill with that gun, and me and my grand kids still hunt with it regularly.

I put a 2.5 lb trigger on my Dads Marlin 336 30/30 along with a polish of the action and a limb saver recoil pad. It’s a sweet shooting gun and absolutely slams the deer inside a 100 yds.
