I knew what he meant, no need for me to blow up at him for that. I was the one asking advice. I’ve reviewed enough fertilizer threads from aldeer to know he knows what he is talking about. I shouldn’t even had to ask..

I mean, if it was a little over an acre - if you go read most of seed mix places like whitetail institute, WMS, etc - they will say if you don't have a soil test sling 300 lbs of 13-13-13 per acre. So he's really not that far off. And as you alluded to in your other post, in reality he didn't put huge amounts of the relevant NPK anyways out of all that as it's mostly filler. So I agree, putting more on is not going to be that beneficial now I wouldn't think, I'd just wait and do some nitrogen later, as I think Ron also recommended.

edit: I'm also just kind of writing out my thought process, not intended to bash anything, or say I'm actually correct. This is how I try to think thru it since I really don't have a clue, heck I'm not really quite sure I know what the 13 is, 13% of each NPK? Something like that.

Yea I’m gonna sit it out for awhile. And I’m sure what I fished in before planting may be too deep…and when I seen the sage I knew lime would probably be key as well. Just trying to patch the crack in the dam, till the road gets fixed..

When I plant I put out 200lbs 17-17-17 per acre , then first week of December 150 lbs 34-0-0.

Deer will seek out the most nutritional food they can get. If your neighbor has more nutritional plots, that's where the deer will go

Ive never seen a soil sample where 13-13-13 or 17-17-17 was even close to the solution. The marketing campaign for those blends are unreal, i think 90% of the population is not aware other fertilizer exists. Before i took some soil classes/got a hort degree, we ended up with near toxic levels of P due to trying to get enough 13-13-13 to actually satisfy the N requirements. It was 10 years before our samples called for any P again. I can't wait for the soil leaching portion of your tutorial, heads may explode.

And i don't say that to be rude, all the fancy seed companies, and green field experts have just done a terrible job of educating people. They will push for everyone to take soil samples and in the same paragraph give blanket recommendations of 13-13-13 rates. It is maddening. Maybe we need a thread where people can post their soil samples and can get true calculations of which fertilizers/amounts. Once you figure it out, it is quite simple and makes a huge difference.

Most food plotters use 13-13-13 or 17-17-17 out of convenience. We aren’t farming for a living. But also I think most on here know you can buy 46-0-0 too though. My soil tests never tell me to use all 13-13-13 to meet nitrogen requirement they usually also have some additional nitrogen. Best option is to take soil test to a coop and let them blend and spread with a buggy but not everyone has that option.

As expensive as fertilizer is these days, exclusively using balanced fertilizers leaves you paying for nutrients you already have in your soil.
That's why I'm a big supporter of regular soil testing. Using only what you need and not paying for what you don't need

This may have been mentioned but fertilizing soil with low PH is also a waste of money. The plants can’t utilize much of the fertilizer unless the ph is close to neutral.

I don't need any potash on the plots I soil tested 2 years ago. Only nitrogen and phosphorus.

Sounds like a little DAP in your future. Well, maybe a ton of it.

Litter would be ideal, but he may like his turkeys
