Wife and I are headed to San Antonio for a long weekend later this weekend. We are planning on catching a bunch of live music and wrapping the trip with the Rodeo and Ryan Bingham show Saturday night. Any places that we need to try. We are big on local, dive bar, type places when we travel. TIA

Hit the Riverwalk. There is a bar tour. Your hotel should have a map. Great place. We've been 10-15 times. All of the food is good. Agave Bar usually has good music. Cyote Ugly is fun for the whole family...haha

Mine too! It's about an hour drive, but there is not anyone playing that I am familiar with until Sat night, Stoney Larue. That's the night we are going to Bingham, may still rent a car for a day and drive up.

I would advise staying off the river walk for eating. It’s all just chain/touristy junk in my experience. It’s ok for a nice night walk though and maybe get a beer.

I thought this chain was interesting. “Bill Miller”. Seems like a Texas Chick-fil-A. “Good enough” food super fast. They smoke the brisket downtown each night and truck it to each chain location. The 2 times I’ve been it’s been pretty decent and extremely fast.

There’s a couple large Mexican restaurants within walking distance of the boardwalk but I can’t remember their names. I asked the locals what they thought and they pointed me there.

All the Mexican or texmex i had was awesome

We tried something different on the river walk - was not dying to go there but girl friend wanted to - went to restaurant called Dicks - the servers there act like dicks/pricks after name of restaurant - I figured I would hate it cause I hate rude behavior - it was actually kind of funny and the food was good - that was 20 years ago

GristMill in Gruene and Coopers BBQ in New Braunfels are good. river walk is overrated. Some good eats up in The Pearl Brewery area, there is also a place called Sams Burger Joint downtown is a good hole the wall burger and fried chicken sandwich place

I agree, but still go and say you've been there. The Alamo is there too, although it's consumed by the city.

The last time I was there I took it upon myself to eat as much brisket as I could. Rudy”s country store and bbq, and The big bib ranked at the top of the list.

Naegelin's bakery in New Braunfels is awesome. Bit of a drive, but 100% worth it for a kolache and a maple bacon doughnut for breakfast.

Dury's gun store downtown San Antonio is also a mandatory stop.

It's a drive but Salt Lick in Driftwood is some of the best BBQ. Gruene Hall is worth the drive even if nobody is playing plus there is quite a bit to do around there. If I was going to San Antonio, I'd spend maybe half day on river walk and the rest of my time in New Braunfels. The Alamo is neat if you've never been, just be prepared its really small and hard to get a grasp on what it was with it being surrounded by the city. Ive spent alot of time in Austin/San Antonio area, there's plenty to do but most fun and interesting stuff is off the "beaten path".
