Ok, y'all are right. Woodcocks prefer the more woody areas, and I guess it's snipes that like the wet areas of a pasture. Seems like they're a smaller version of a woodcock.

Snipe are smaller and almost look like bats flying around. Woodcock zig zag too just not as much. Look very similar but so do a lot of short birds. I’ve had several different ones that look a lot alike but differ in size and flight patterns. Recently learned about dowitchers as I kept telling they were bigger than a snipe but flew in larger flocks and less erratic.

One year there was a ton of woodcock in North Al. We would run into them quail hunting. The next year there weren't any. When the quail disappeared, we stopped hunting those woods. A lot of good times were had there.

Being a migratory bird they’re habitat dependent. I used to kill a bunch at Seven-Mile in the 80s. Habitat changed and is too grown up now.

Snipe will be found in open shallow flooded/Damp fields. When they get up they Say "Jeep--Jeep--Jeep" and haul azz flying erratically low to the ground and will often circle back much higher and dive bomb back into the area. Woodcock are hardwoods birds....damp/lowland soils. They are SLOW compared to a snipe....they rise up and twist through the trees sometimes emitting somewhat of a Chatter call.
