I bought a suppressor in January and my paperwork finally came through. I pick it up next week. I bought if for some of my hunting rifles and my 300 blackout AR pistol. I think I want to buy a compact .308 to hunt with using subsonics. Any suggestions on a good set up?

I’d avoid subsonics for deer. They’re cool but you’re limiting yourself. Regular rounds are still comfortable to shoot without hearing protection but have better ballistics.

I have a Remington 700 I got the barrel chopped down to 18” and threaded that’s fun to shoot. Newest one is a 20” Christensen arms.

I’ve personally seen a hog’s head explode from a 300Blk 220gr subsonic round at 100yds

300blk subsonics are equivalent to a 45ACP.

I don’t think anyone is going to argue a 45ACP won’t take down a deer, but by using a subsonic, you’re unnecessarily handicapping yourself. There’s no benefit to the shooter or the deer by using the subs. Both subsonic and supersonic are going to be hearing safe out of the rifle and have the same recoil, but one is going to have a ton more velocity and energy behind it to help put the deer down. It’ll extend your range 4x further as well.

Christensen Arms just came out with a Ridgeline Scout 308 with a 16.5” barrel.

But when you're shooting a deer out of your back window in the neighborhood the subsonic doesn't attract any unwanted attention from the po po.

If you are shooting subsonic you might as well just use the 300blk you already have. It will lob a .308 bullet 1000fps just like a 308win will. If you want a compact 308 for supers then it is hard to beat the TC encore platform for compact guns. If you want to stick with a bolt then I would look at the sig cross, the Ruger gun site scout, or the mossberg mvp platforms. All make 308 with 16.5” barrels.

Especially with a neck shot.

I own a 30 cal can and will not use subsonics to hunt with a 308 as the OP mentioned. 300 blackout on yotes and hogs i do. Yes you can kill a deer with a 22 too……..

This is all factually accurate. This is why I shoot subsonic 450 Bushmaster. Lot of .450 pistol bullets that expand at low velocity and have the necessary weight to make a clean kill. That's like standard table fare in the world of bullets. Also why .45-70 isn't as good for this you really need to shoot lead or some fancy subsonic bullet someone's got a small batch of. That's what I started with and I just had to figure it out so I've changed my setup several times.

Essentially I'm shooting a 45 Long Colt. In the realm of reality that's what this is. Really good for shooting a hog off a feeder during deer season.

I'm using a .450 Bushmaster Bolt Gun. The Wand of Death during deer season I can blast hogs at will and not mess up my spots. That was the intent from inception.

The rest of it don't work very well. I started with .300BLK.

I can slap my Suppressor on my 308, 300blk, or my 6.5 shooting regular (standard velocity) ammo and it's not too much louder than a hot 22 magnum round! Hell That's just plain cool to me i guess 😃

Yep. I like not dealing with the muzzle blast or recoil. Very good for young hunters as well.

I love my Ruger American Predator in .308 with an 18" barrel. Shoots Fed 180gr SP sub moa with my suppressor mounted. Their tapered barrel profile makes them considerably lighter than most threaded barrel bolt actions, and they are one of the cheapest on the market.

I don't think subsonics are necessary for bolt actions. All the noise is happening pretty far from your face, so it's comfortable to shoot without hearing protection. Subsonics will still be loud enough for deer to hear it. Even if the rifle was completely silent, the bullet impact is pretty loud.

Yep. And I wear hearing aids and still think it is cool as hell. My fav is 22 suppressed with subsonics

Yep have one of those also, and a suppressed 22 is fun to shoot no doubt
