The guys at work are getting together to by our boss a retirement gift and we want to buy him a nice rod and reel. What would y’all recommend with a budget of $400-$500 I’m partial to Shimano reels but haven’t bought anything new in a long time.

I just picked up a Curado 200HG and a 7' St. Croix AvidX and I really like the combo. Hard to beat Shimano anything. I've read the Curado DC (digital control) isn't really worth the money, but I'm sure that's an opinion not shared by everyone. I like the chit out of mine.

that price range unlocks a lot of nice options - TacticalBassin on YouTube has some pretty good buyers guides videos, broken down by price range ... last year, i got a Dobyns rod & a Shimano SLX 150 HG & i love it - it’ll sling a weightless worm a mile! i do switch that Shimano SLX reel out to a G Loomis worm/jig rod i bought from a guy on here a couple years ago; love that rod/reel combo, as well

My curado dc is hands down the smoothest reel I've ever had in my hand. I've never had any high end reels though.

Thanks guys! I’m going today to pick something out. I’ll let y’all know what I end up with.
can't wait to see what you get -- this boss must be a good'un - $400-500 for a rod/reel combo is a very generous gift

Snoopy rod and reel. I had a boss 20 years ago he would have got a 50 lb anchor and 50 ft of rope. Thx god we have new management that appreciate the workers.

Curado is hard to beat for the price then a nice rod like a hammer or fx and you would be right at $400 I am a big fan of the fx rods. Highly recommend them

So upon further questioning we found out he wanted a nice spinning set up, not a baitcaster. I wanted to get him a shimano stradic but I couldn’t find any in stock. Ended up getting a Shimano Zodias Spinning Rod and a Daiwa Tatula Spinning Reel. For what it’s worth I got the rod and reel from Marks. A fella named John Norris helped me. He discounted the reel $10 and gave a rod sleeve for free. Seems like Marks gets bashed all the time but I was treated very well.
