I have a 52 acre stand of 40 year old loblolly pines that we are planning to burn. They been thinned three times over the years and the last burn was done May 1, 2019. Forester is suggesting we burn in October in hopes that it will knock back sweetgums and further reduce logging debris from 2018. Don't really see a lot of controlled burns in the fall. Any known negatives other than reduction of cover during hunting season?

I’d worry about erosion if we had a winter and spring like this one we had. 60-70” of rain on charred dirt might not be good.

Light it up now if you wanna knock gum back. Lots of burns done in the fall but mostly site prep burns.

I burned in early November this past year but it was for site prep to reforest the area. I thought that it greatly reduced the competition and allowed good visibility to the areas for hunting. I did experience some erosion in some roads but that could have been from the excessive rain.
