Has anyone ever seen one of these before? I haven't. It's set in 4"x 4" square concrete. with a 3-digit number (that I've taken out.) It's within Wheeler Wildlife Refuge. It looks like it's had been painted orange at some point. I wonder if TVA has a website that shed any light?

I've seen a lot of TVA survey markers set in concrete like that in my part of Marshall County. That was a long time ago in my teen years when roaming the woods all day long was OK and people respected one another.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

More rhan likely its either a corner or an elevation marker. They like to put them in highspots..sometimes they mark old cemetaries...homeplaces and stuff like that. Most of the ones ive found are elevation markers..if you topo a high spot on tva land and walk to the peak i can almost guarantee you there will be one there somewhere. I dont know how many ive found..but its alot..and i can take you to all of them from memory.

I was next to an abandoned graveyard and it appeared to convey the message "Here's the corner."

Do you think that this an original marker that was put out in the 30's or was it put out later?

Survey benchmark. TVA most likely has a map with all the benchmarks on their property as well as others. If those numbers are in the 5-600 range, it is the elevation at that point. Survey monuments have Latitude, Longitude and elevation. grundan, I was originally thinking BM, too, but it's # is half of the location's elevation.

If you have USGS topo maps of the area, you will find that TVA elevation monuments are shown on them. At least my old USGS topo maps of Marshall County show them.

As a surveyor, I see them all the time. It’s the state trying to put something in a little more permanent than a 1/2” X 18” rebar. However, they are not always set with the best accuracy. I’ve actually known a GW to set a few, having absolutely no surveying experience lol.

Survey benchmark. TVA most likely has a map with all the benchmarks on their property as well as others. If those numbers are in the 5-600 range, it is the elevation at that point. Survey monuments have Latitude, Longitude and elevation. If they are on SPC, other than that they do not require LL&E. If you paid me enough, I could set concrete monuments on all your corners.
