For those of you that do it, how serious are you about keeping records of your hunting and work day activities? What do you do about hunting notes?
For several years now, I have been keeping a written record of the notable events that occur during each of my hunts and the work days at the farm. I do it to remind myself year to year about the things that were seen while hunting and any important events that occurred during the time away from home. If nothing else I have a record for my grand kids to read and know about.
In the last three years I've moved these records to a Google Calendar and I include a NOAA weather graph, select sun/moon phase data, maps indicating my location, video clips from my phone of things I see and comments on the events of the day, and lastly the written notes. The only thing I can think of that is not included that I probably should is individual deer data after a kill.
I also keep a duplicate copy of all this data on a USB Flash drive. It can be time consuming but I think I'll be glad I've done it when my last hunt arrives.

I just enjoy hunting, that sounds like a lot of work and time.

I do it too. I'm not as consistent as I would like to be. I was using Pro Hunters Journal. It's an online deal, but they have so few users that I was afraid they might fold up and my journals would be lost. So I'm in the process of moving everything to my hard drive with MS Works Word Processor. I can attach photos also. Even though I add the moon phase, I mostly use it to record the day. I note as much detail as I can. Some of them are pretty short. If I'm lucky, they can be fairly long. It's just a way of remembering the day for me. I enjoy writing them. I've been trying to go back retroactively and making journals from years past. It's amazing what I forgot. That's why I try to keep current. I make short notes on my phone while in the woods if I think I might forget, and transfer to word processor files after I'm home.

It can be a lot of work for sure. That's why I'm behind. But I can usually find a few minutes at some point to catch up. I imagine I spend less time on it than some spend on here though.

There are some folk out there that get a kick out of data collection. To them it’s fun, not work. I’ve kept spreadsheets of data from hunts for a couple seasons. It’s cool stuff. I think I’m going to transition to pen and pad this year. I can always manually import the data to google sheets or whatever at another time.

It flat out is a lot of time and effort.
My cousin and I hunt together regularly. At the end of every hunt, we share all about what we saw. We don't hide any details whether on private or public land. The discussion keeps things fresh in my mind so when I go back home and write up my notes, its all easier to remember. It take the better part of 2 hours to get it all done, but not necessarily 2 consecutive hours.

I go when I can go and feel like going. I don't need a dang spread sheet to tell me what I need to do.

I love the numbers side of it...we log every single hunt and then I compile them all after each season. Each hunter fills out the below log, then I put it in multiple different spreadsheets, based on different factors. Below are a couple of examples. The other guys used to make fun of it / me.... but after 5 years of data, we are starting to get a pretty good idea of when to be in the woods and their tune has definitely changed regarding filling out the logs.

There are 3 certainties in an uncertain world:

Its definitely neat. I have a friend that used to keep data like that. It would be useless for me to do that nowadays. I can count on one hand how many times I get to hunt by myself, so my data would need lines like how many bathroom breaks were needed, how many times did we drop something that spooked everything in the field, did we get cold and leave early, how many times did we need to blow our nose. And my personal favorite how many times did we fall down walking to or from the stand.

On my place during a quarter moon phase. I love data, numbers, excel, etc. past 2 years I haven’t tracked data but I have many years in the past. I know in the last 5 years our lease has produced 5 bucks within 24 hours of January 8th. I’ve killed 2 of those. I take 1-2 days off now every year for those dates. I hunt a BUNCH (4 sits a week on average) but the 8th is just a hot day for some reason.

Man, Joe, that’s an impressive spread sheet. Looks like you could graph a bunch of data and see some possible trends if you wanted.
I don’t keep that much detailed info. Mine is mostly just to have a record of what I saw and where I was when I saw it. Sort of a history record of my hunting days.

There are two 3-4 days in January we don't miss at our place. Should say we try not to miss.

5,6,7 dates may be skewed by the above number of hunts.

Selling all my hunting gear. It’s obvious I’m not smart enough to hunt anymore. I thought I was lucky enough to hunt for a couple of hours, now I need a couple days f hours to document it?
