My daughter turns 5 this month and I think santa is going to bring her a four wheeler this year. Too young for her first four wheeler or what suggestions do y’all have as a starter?

My son had a Chinese knock off for his first and then a Polaris sportsman 90. The sportsman was a piece of crap. The Chinese knock off is still running 10 years later.

Sig Sauer, to hell and back reliable.

Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.

Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

My thoughts are to be sure she wears a helmet and to get one that gives you the option to limit the maximum speed to what you feel comfortable with her going.

You know your child better than anyone else on here. If you have doubts about whether she is ready for one or not, there is certainly no harm in waiting longer.

You can start her on a battery powered one for starters. Buddy of mine had a lil razor for his kid and it was great for kids to start.

My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter has one of those battery powered vehicles that came with a remote for her dad to use to override her control of it, too. I thought that was a pretty cool option to have. So far she prefers for him to control it and she can just ride.

Not trying to scare you, but then again, maybe I am. We had a toddler decapitated in our area a few years ago
on a battery-operated Powerwheel. The child drove up underneath a trailer. I'd wait until maybe 10 or so.

Since you asked for opinions, 5 is too young. Way to many chances for a bad decision to cause serious injury. I have seen it with several relatives and friend's kids.

Most kids are still on training wheels at 5.

My son started on a small battery powered one at 2 - quickly outgrew it to a larger powerwheel and then had his first gas powered ATV at 5 - it was an Eaton 50 (Taiwan made). Sold it when he outgrew it and haven't bought him another yet because there isn't a good in between size I've found to fit him. In meanwhile he wears the tires off of the go cart - literally - be busted another one doing donuts the other day so its sitting till I replace it.

Thanks guys. She currently has a quick electric one that she handles no issue. I believe that she wouldn't have issues with the controlling part of a 50cc, just her daddy side of her will come out and do something utterly stupid with it and get hurt is my biggest concern.

My point exactly. It's no fun tending to a kid with a serious injury or broken bones.

I think it depends on child's ability. I don't think 5 is too young. Got my son one at age 4 with a throttle limiter and key FOB where I can hit a button and kill the engine anytime. He's been riding it for a year with no problems in a wide open pasture. When he first started we kept it dialed down so low it barely went as fast as one of the battery-powered options. As things stand right now, I've dialed it up a little to probably 10mph max. Wear safety gear, keep an eye on them, no different/no more dangerous than riding a bike in my opinion.

Don't waste you money on those Chinese knock offs, you have to be extremely lucky to find a good one and I spent WAY to much money trying to get a lucky one. I finally got smart I got my son a Polaris Sportsman and he was 5yrs old at the time, was I scared and nervous, yes, but did I make sure he was being extra safe absolutely. He has to wear a helmet when riding and it's governed down to only max out at 15mph. His first year I pretty much rode on the back of it to teach him things that I thought was important to pay attention too as he earned my trust the more he got some freedom with it. Now he's 7 and he's earned enough of my trust to be able to ride it as he pleases as long as someone is watching him. Take it slow, teach them, and let them enjoy it.

Too young. I don't even really ride my kids around on mine, just because I don't want them to think of an ATV as a "toy", but just a tool/equipment. It's also why I've toyed with the idea of a UTV or golf cart (would need to be gas), instead of a 4 wheeler. Heck, I'd rather them be on a dirt bike than a 4 wheeler. A dirt bike wants to break your leg; a 4 wheeler wants to kill you.

I have a Chinese knockoff for my 4yo grandson. One screw and it stops it from going much more than a slow walking pace. he loves it. Easy to work on. I bought it used, no telling how old it is, and runs fine.
