of you, here on the board like to hunt, fish, a Veteran of our Military branches and play golf?
Reason I ask.... I am the State Director for the Veteran Golfers Association (VGA), a Nationwide, non-profit golf organization that gives those Veterans, family members of Veterans, and Combat Wounded (Purple Heart Recipients) an avenue to come together and join the comradery and fellowship with brothers and sisters from across the different branches of service. In Alabama there were 14 members in 2017 and we have grown to 52 this year! We play all over the state and I will begin working on the 2019 Season next week. Our regular season goes from 1 Mar - 30 June and then Post Season play begins. Last year we have 6 Events throughout the state from Huntsville, to Guntersville to Dothan... this next year I am looking to put together 8-10 events, plus our fundraiser on Armed Forces Day at Lagoon Park Golf Course and the Southern Region has agreed to bring a sub-regional to the Montgomery area (first time for AL) MEMBERSHIP DRIVE FOR 2019 WILL BEGIN 1 NOV... REGISTER THROUGH THE VGA WEBSITE. any questions refer them to me.

A little background about the VGA. It was dreamed about and came to fruition in 2013 by 5 Combat Wounded Veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as they were recovering from wounds during fighting in Afghanistan. The hospital staff there allowed them, once they were able, to go the Army Course and get some outside, golf course therapy… this time allowed those recovering from their wounds to enjoy each others fellowship and gave them an outlet the share with others as to what they were going through. In 2014 they applied for their "non-profit" status and once they received it, they formed the VGA with 362 players Nationwide... Now, 4 years later.. the VGA has grown to over 5000 members in 48 states and growing every day/year. While we play competitive, individual play golf... our focus in not about winning, it is the golf of the VGA to give Veterans an avenue to come together and have a great time with other Vets.
If you are interested, please contact me at derrick.percival@vgagolf.org
This is a Volunteer position and as a retired member of the military I am doing the best I can to get other Veterans together and enjoy the game of golf!
The website is VGAGolf.org
I am not soliciting... this is strictly for informational purposes as we are small and I doing me best to make AL the Best VGA Chapter in the Country!!

Now, less than a month til gun season!! smile

Have you talked to Ty Anderson the Pro at Highland Oaks? He does a weekly golf/coffee/talk session with veterans and even has a tournament every year. I believe the tourney is on Veterans Day this year and I'm supposed to play on Ty's team. He has a great thing going and is supported by PGA.

General,
We had an event there this year and looking forward to another one next year... I took the place of Tim King (TJ) who works at that course... we are going to courses that wants us there and ask us to come back. I don't try to run a shady event.. we start every event with the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance and will continue to do so as long as I am the Director.

We will also be going back to Ft Rucker.. if you have any questions, send me an email and I will respond that way..

Aim High!!

If I wasn’t at Fort Bragg I’d definitely get in contact with you. Sounds like a program you have going, have you spoke to anyone from the fallen outdoors? I’m not sure who the Alabama lead is but if you have Facebook it will not be hard to find.

bigcountry,
look at the website (www.vgagolf.org) I know NC has a Chapter..... and you can play in any state, any event as long as you are a member and register through the website.

I don't think I have heard of fallen outdoors, but I have a good friend in South Alabama that hosts hunts for disabled individuals and he is in a wheelchair himself... So, I do support them as I can..

General,
Join us and you can enjoy the time spent with us... I will be getting with the folks in Dothan within the next couple of weeks and hopefully have my schedule together by the middle of Nov... It will be posted on the AL VGA Chapter Facebook page.
I will send you a PM when I am going to be down there to practice and play in our event.
