My lab is an absolute pain to try to cut his nails. It is too the point that we just take him to the vet. Last time they had 4 people and after ~10 mins the lady vet came out sweating, and all disheveled, and said that we need to bring him back so that they can put him under.

~an hour before we left the wife gave him 25m of valium. We ahve also tried zanaz and Ace. Doesn't matter.

He goes into panic mode. He won't bite you but will hurt you or himself trying to stop it.

Any thoughts, ideas, etc to help.

He is an inside dog so they don't wear down.

My Boykin is the same way. We take him to pet smart and the groom him and do his nails. They have a stand with a short leash that holds him in place kinda like a goat catch.

2 out of my 3 will just lay there and let me dremel them with the occasional kick. Now the female shepherd is a different story. I call her up on the corner of the couch and make her down. Then i have to lay across her just a little so i can get leverage to dremel hers. Now with that said she's doing it out of obedience with a little compulsion. I talk to her and constantly verbally good girl her until done then reward her big time with dehydrated hotdog treats. She's definitly stressed during the procedure so that's why i reward her and talk to her during and after. I've done all mine since they came home as pups but still have fits occasionally

My wife is a dog groomer, she uses a harness called a hammock. Looks just like a hammock with 4 holes for the legs to go through. The hammock is connected to an overhead which raises the dog in the hammock off of the table. With no legs on the ground they can squirm all they want but eventually they wear themselves out and give in.

I've got a few clients like that. Some dogs just absolutely will not let you do it. Chemical restraint is your friend. Work smarter not harder.

Not a big fan of acepromazine. Dose range is so wide and affects them differently. Given low dose to a huge dog and he slept for a day, given a high dose to a jack russell and.didnt phase him. Diazepam/midazolam helps but still not a big fan. For the ones I absolutely cannot control I use dexmedetomidine/butorphanol IM and put them in a secluded quiet place until they're sedated. Do the procedure then reverse them. Usually walk out in 10-15 minutes.

Obviously, I'd rather not have to sedate them, but some dogs you have no choice.

Dremel is the only way to go on dog nails. Gotta start them when they're puppies.. just turn it on around them regularly and reward them and they wont mind it.

Swaddle like an infant, one person has scissor lock. The other cuts the nails while putting body weight on dog. Do this after a long and exhausting walk, run, play session.

We need to invent inside dog shoes that wear down their nails as they walk around.

Actually the proper tool is already at your disposal.

Correct. If he will fetch run him on pavement every day. I've never had a dog's nails cut

What's pavement? Nothing but gravel and red clay out here

Beer Belly - Listen to Gomer. I've had dogs that go ballistic, when trying to use cutters, tolerate the Dremel really well. The cutters scare the living chit out of alot of dogs. Plus, with the Dremel, you get a nice rounded nail, instead of a sharp edge. I do my dogs nails in 10 min or less using it. thumbup
