Got a stray came up and is scared to death of people. It has taken up with our dog and stays on the back porch. Wife said it has been growling at the kids. It looks like a jack russel. This evening it started raining and my 2 year old started running up on the pooch and the dog just about tore him up. He can dodge faster than I would think a 2 year old could. I tried to kick the dog but it got away. I got the bb gun and shot it and ran it off. 5 min later it's laying on the back porch again. Shoot it again and run it off. 5 min it's back. I almost broke out the 270 for some target practice. I don't see any other way. It will eventually get one of the kids and you can't catch it to haul it off.

I'd be worried about rabies for sure if it is a stray.

I'm not one that kills dogs. I'm not even sure it's not one of the neighbors. Would animal control come get it?

Scare it off the porch and shot with the .270. No reason is shooting the porch.

Hit it with a brick hammer, very quiet and saves ammo. Roll it up in a corn sack and get rid of it.

Call animal control to come pick it up. If you don't have animal control, call the county and tell them the situation, they will more than likely tell you to dispatch it yourself.

If you can't get your hands on a live trap....sneak up the stairs so it can't run away. Net it in a large fish net. I was going to do that to a cat that was on my back porch. The cat got scared when he saw me coming and he jumped off the porch (probably 10' drop). Second time that has happened.

You could make a choke pole with a piece of rope/cable and a pipe.

Wait til the wife and kiddos aren't home and scare it off the porch and shoot it. No need for a 270 on a Jack Russel. A 22LR is more than enough, even if you just shoot center of mass.

I just went through this same deal. Jefferson County animal control will not come out and get the dog unless YOU have it captured/penned up. The dog I had to deal with didn't growl or bite at the kids. BUT, I didn't know anything about the dog. And I sure the hell wasn't going to allow a danger to my kids. And the dog was always in our backyard by the playset. The dog stayed under my old building and I couldn't catch it or get rid of it. She had puppies that found their way to the neighbors house and was coming back into heat. For the safety of my kids, and my dog (I was afraid the stray would bring disease, and more puppies I don't want to deal with), I took care of the stray. My neighbors pinned up the puppies and animal control came and got them.

I got a fancy air rifle for armadillos that would work great in this application, doesn't bother the neighbors, attract attention or any of the bad stuff. When the squirrels started digging the wifes flower pots on the deck it was perfect.

Stray growlers are DRT at my house. You need me come over and kill it?

Take your kids hunting instead of hunting your kids.

I'd rather be LOST in the woods than FOUND in the city.
