I'd get a Remington Model 700 of your choosing.

I hadnt owned one but Ive looked em over and known people who did. Id steer clear of the 783. Larrys is going to have some heck of a deals on the T/C Compass this week. Reviews of that rifle are very solid.

Remington 700, xbolt, steyr
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Is the Remington 700 a better made level than the 783? Appreciate the responses Absolutely. You could pick up a 700 SPS then, upgrade the stock at some point in the future if you like.

Maybe I'm a gun snob but I have never been happy with budget guns.I always sold then at a small loss and bought something else anyway which made them not so much budget guns for me. I would even get a used Savage 111 cheap which is slightly better than the axis. I bought one for a friend a couple years ago for $200. In budget guns I like the Ruger American but there are still some Tikkas around under $500. Definitely Rem 700 though before the 783. The 700 is the basis for many high end custom guns. You could do just about anything to it as money allowed,or keep it as is.

You should be able to find a used M700 for around $400 - $450.

I've a got buddy that has one of those new 700's from Academy. With factory Core-Lokts it will shoot sub MOA. Without really trying all that hard, he loaded some handloads that will literally shoot 1 hole @ 100. To say I was impressed was an understatement.

Ive had 3 Axis, and 1 783. I sold the Axis's. They were all shooters but they just wouldnt grow on me. I have a 783 compact in 308. Got about $200 in it finding it on sale and while Remington had their fall rebate going on. I prefer it over the Axis's I had. If you are patient you can find some nice older Rem 700 in 30-06 on Gunbroker, on armslist, or local pawn shops. Ive seen at least 5 or 6 on GB in the last few months that sold for $325 or less, or had no reserves at $275-325ish and no one bid on them. These were nice rifles with nice wood on them. Not a truck beater. http://www.gunbroker.com/item/719227827

Id get the Sako for sale in classifieds This; I have a 75 Hunter(wood) stainless in .270 and is the most consistently accurate rifle I own. Will hold it's value; be worth the same( or more) in 10 years.

Will hold it's value; be worth the same( or more) in 10 years. Sako's are good rifles.I have owned several and still own a couple but I greatly prefer my Kimber Montana for a pure hunting rifle. The Montana is just so much lighter and I don't really like the Sako mounting system. My Montana is only slightly less accurate than my Sako's and plenty accurate for a hunting gun.
