Did you harden your wood?

Did you harden your wood? You mean like bone it? No, like kiln dry it, makes the pores of the wood dry out and become more dense. Nothing like working with dry wood.

Looks great Joe. I'm not a fan of metal bats. So many are hurt by the way a ball comes off a metal bat. Poly would be a good finish choice.

That's some good-looking work, Joe.

Even when I played highschool ball, I was always partial to wood bats. teammates and other teams' players always looked at me like I was green and had antennae growing out of my head when I stepped up to the plate with a black Rawlings wood bat. I was never a great hitter by any means, but I hit better with it than the metal bats. In fact, the only HR I ever hit was with that wood bat. Ended up breaking it in one of my last games I ever played, hitting an inside pitch down on the handle.

I would say before you turn it down, this way your would will not shrink. Once you dry it to somewhere around 3-5% mc it should remain it's final shape. The peice you bought may have already been kiln dried, but there is definetly a difference between kiln dried and air dried wood.

This bat will only be about 29 inches now. May be a little bit/heavy for him now (7-years old), but purposely made it so he could grow into it. Hope to be able to do this more as he gets bigger and perfect the process. I'll need a bigger lathe to be able to make anything past 30 inches though.

Also please make sure to flatten the knob end off when finished. Hope it serves you / him well.

Ended up breaking it in one of my last games I ever played, hitting an inside pitch down on the handle. I was an average player when in elementary school. Didn't play my 5th grade year. Couldn't hit anything with a metal bat in 6th grade, but dad gave me a wooden bat and I made the all star team. I also got the weird looks and comments for having a wooden bat, but hit a couple homers with it (I felt like the Natural). I think it helps your swing because it's not as forgiving as a metal bat.

Wood Bat Discussion - Baseball Fever Forum The link above is an awesome discussion thread (going on for years) about wood bats from a baseball forum. Some DIY guys on there. The poster "BMH" is actually a Hillerich... as in Hillerich & Bradsby, the founders of Louisville Slugger. BMH has a wealth of knowledge, still works with the wood bat side of LS, and is generous with his advice, as he is not threatened by a handful of guys making bats in their garages.

I love the sound of a ball coming off wood. There are some wooden bat leagues around for older kids. But, a 29 inch bat is really long for a 7 year old. So, I am going to guess that this bat is going to be way to heavy for him at that age. My son is 12 and he plays with a 30 inch bat. The longest bat on his team is a 31. There are still some kids swinging 28 inch bats on his team. I just can't see a 7 year old having any decent swing with a bat that long, even without the weight of wood.

He's pretty big for his age and you are right, it might be too big/heavy for him for this year. I'm just trying to make sure it's something he can grow into rather than being something he'll grow out of in 6 months. He can also choke up on the bat to some degree.
