I watched a lot of the hour long show documenting this. I did not see all of it as I was flipping back and forth. Actually, he had a parachute. For some reason he says the powers that be made him wear one and told him about it the day before the jump but he never identified who the powers that be are. He acted like that was a big deal as it messed up his rolling onto his back and he hadn't practiced with a chute. Personally, I think that was contrived drama and the chute was planned all along. I guess it was there in case something went wrong with the wind or he changed his mind. Pretty cool and gutsy either way though.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

They had told him that he'd be required to wear a chute, but the requirement was lifted before he jumped. He did actually jump without a parachute.
