Tv died years ago. I watch sports or the internet I disagree, I think it's as good as its ever been. Having Hulu and Netflix, along with showtime and HBO are a good start

Game of Thrones (HBO) is the best TV show of all time and 2nd place isn't even particularly close.
(although it doesn't exactly meet the learning/history stipulations)

If you're a "car guy", Top Gear on BBC is great (not to be confused with the American version on TLC or History or one of those channels). I haven't watched the new season with the new hosts, but they still show a lot of reruns of the previous seasons with Jeremy Clarkson/Richard Hammond/James May and it's one of the best shows on TV. BBC's Sherlock is also very good but not sure if it's on yet. The first 3 (I think) "seasons" are on Netflix - they consist of about 3 episodes each, but at about an hour and a half per episode, so it's a little more of a time commitment.
If you're a music person, check out MTV Live (previously called Palladia), VH1 Classic and AXSTV for live concerts - tons of good music on them.
