Put $50 more with it and order a Steyr Pro Hunter from Bud's. Your shoulder will appreciate it down the road. I can't explain what it is about the design of the Steyr Pro Hunter stock, but it dissapates recoil better than any on the market that I've seen. Not to mention that the Steyr is deadly accurate with a fantastic trigger straight out of the box.

I owned a beautiful Model 700 in 300 for years. It wasn't one of my favorite calibers. I went short action and never looked back. Mine shot great on paper and I shot a deer and an elk with it but I had a wound or 2 and some misses. I think it was just a jinxed rifle.

This guy knows his guns! In the 300 win mag the big bulky savage will out shoot most of the high end guns on today's market. Nothing special to look at but it does what it was designed to do very well

Please tell me where I could pick up a Sako in the $600 range? Speaking of Sako 85's, Euro Optic has a real good deal on them. $1100 for a regular $1600 gun. Hard to find a deal like that on the Sako 85's.

I'd do a Steyr, Weatherby Vanguard, Savage depending on how much I was looking to spend.
The Savage would probably out shoot all of them.

I'd do 7mm myself. Plenty for those distances. The .300 really has no advantage at that range on deer. The .300's you could squeeze out a 1k yard deer, but once you get into heavier bullets the recoil is substantial and I'd skip right over the .300 Magnums and get into .338's. I like the Weatherby magnums in the .300's. If you are going that big may as well sling it as fast as possible. The .300 Win Mag just doesn't really fit anywhere to me, but I reload so cost of ammo is not a factor.
