Put $50 more with it and order a Steyr Pro Hunter from Bud's. Your shoulder will appreciate it down the road. I can't explain what it is about the design of the Steyr Pro Hunter stock, but it dissapates recoil better than any on the market that I've seen. Not to mention that the Steyr is deadly accurate with a fantastic trigger straight out of the box.

Steyr is great. Just bought one this past year. Used a browning Abolt for 30 yrs and it still drives tacks. My steyr is pretty heavy if you do a lot of walking. I shoot 150 grain core lokts and they work great.

I owned a beautiful Model 700 in 300 for years. It wasn't one of my favorite calibers. I went short action and never looked back. Mine shot great on paper and I shot a deer and an elk with it but I had a wound or 2 and some misses. I think it was just a jinxed rifle.

I don't won't to ruffle any feathers or anything and I think everyone should shoot whatever they want but I would like to ask why the 300 mag seems to be so popular in Alabama.

I'll also agree on the Tikka. The Steyr is fine too if you want a little more weight.

Just fair warning....the tikka T3 lite in .300wm is a handful to shoot. And I have .338wm and a 300 ultra mag in the safe so I'm used to hard recoiling rifles.

Speaking of Sako 85's, Euro Optic has a real good deal on them. $1100 for a regular $1600 gun. Hard to find a deal like that on the Sako 85's.

I'd do a Steyr, Weatherby Vanguard, Savage depending on how much I was looking to spend.

The Savage would probably out shoot all of them.

My reasoning is that the new lease/club has several potential shots in the 300-600 yd range...granted my eyes suck(a good scope will help me)lol...I was thinking a bigger caliber or at least 24" barrel may be better than my old 270 22" barrel...just briefly looking at the ballistic charts pop's 7wsm looks to have good ballistics for this distance as well as energy...I also found a 308 with 24"barrel.. I know it all still comes down to the shooter and his/her ability but I wanted all the extra help I can get...I did see a 300mag with 26" barrel could this be overkill and have no different effect on long range shooting? Most charts seem to be based off 24" barrels from what I see.

I'd do 7mm myself. Plenty for those distances. The .300 really has no advantage at that range on deer. The .300's you could squeeze out a 1k yard deer, but once you get into heavier bullets the recoil is substantial and I'd skip right over the .300 Magnums and get into .338's. I like the Weatherby magnums in the .300's. If you are going that big may as well sling it as fast as possible. The .300 Win Mag just doesn't really fit anywhere to me, but I reload so cost of ammo is not a factor.
