Here is mine from this year before I put it on a cedar plaque. I boiled it and it did turn the bases dark but I think it turned out good.

The fat can turn the horns but sap residue from rubbing pines will make it do the same when boiling. I've done 8-10 now and each have differing levels of darkening. The more evidence of rubbing usually results in a greater change in color.

I am not one to bad mouth someone else's work so I would never have brought up about the dark bases but since it already has been mentioned I will comment.

Whoever did your mount most definitely boiled it and they did not take any precautions to protect the antlers to keep them from darkening. Even if you boil skulls there are techniques that can be used to keep the antlers from turning dark.

If you like it and are okay with it then nothing else matters. Enjoy it.

If you don't care for the dark antlers, then if you are ever around my way, stop and see me. I know of a method to return them close to the way they looked before they were darkened. thumbup

Sorry if you disagree. A man pays money for a service and should be happy with the result. I work hard for my money. I paid $400 for the ugliest turkey you have ever seen. I had to reposition the tail, put new wings on it, change out the base, bend him upright, and buy and mount a new $65 head. I have a deer that was put on the wrong size form. It happens. I'm not in the taxidermy field, but I do a lot of small work myself and have seen enough to know that an error was made. You said as much yourself, it could have and should have been prevented. I think we agree on that.
