I see in the rules nothing about "trail" cams being prohibited on WMA land. I do see or have seen posts about "cellular" cams being prohibited. Can someone who knows give me a definitive answer. Thanks in advance.

I don’t believe there are any provisions for type of camera at least on most WMAs. Just be aware that it is public ground and anything left there is considered abandoned. Cameras, stands, gear. If you wouldn’t leave it sitting on the ground in a Walmart parking lot don’t be any more surprised or upset if it goes missing from a WMA.

Mdees, yeah I got that memo. I've got some OLD regular cameras I intend to use. I usually carry some sticks in my backpack and elevate them some.

To the OP. Yes you can put out cameras. And yes you take a chance of them being stolen. But they have some good cheap cameras out there now. It’s worth the risk for me.

Cell cams can’t be used during turkey season on WMA’s. That is the only restriction.

That’s from a conversation with a game warden regarding theft of property left on a WMA. They don’t generally pursue such cases. He said anything left in public, which a WMA is, is considered abandoned there. I’m not condoning taking someone’s property found there but you won’t likely have recourse if your property is taken by someone else.

GardePro cameras on Amazon. From $30/40 on the low end up to about $100. I have several and they've been good.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I put a placard with my name and number on it with a little note that says "please do not steal this camera."
One time a guy was stupid enough to steal the camera, open the battery pack, see the note, and text me to tell me he was stealing the camera, I called the warden, justice served. Felt great.

I haven’t seen that GW up my way in several years. So maybe he moved on or just wasn’t into chasing such cases. Either way the point remains, if you leave something you value in the woods, especially on public land, the chances of theft are high and the likelihood of recovery low. Maybe higher now days with air tags and other tracking options. I put my cameras up high out of line of sight if I put them on public ground.

It's 100% theft if you can prove it and that guys a DA I can tell you from experience that they take camera theft very seriously...in fact, it is a bigger deal than common theft, stealing a camera can be likened in court to theft of a cell phone and some surrounding penalties that go above and beyond theft but get into some communication and information distribution charges as well...they can (and do) press that issue pretty far if you get the right warden involved.

The closest one is Skyline and its probably an hour away. You've got Wheeler, some TVA, and the Arsenal.
