Weather forecast called for up to 5 inches of rain on Sunday. So the TVA opened the gates on G Dam. For once, we had a good current flow on Wheeler Lake. And it did turn on the catfish bite. We had a blast catching these 10 lb flatheads all day on Saturday. I did hook one big blue. It came to the surface, rolled and threw the hook. I had so much tension on the line, Dennis got hit in the chest with the hook and a 3oz weight. ps, the total rain we got on Sunday at my house was 1/4 inch. Here are two of the many we caught. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2024/07/full-3327-235341-resized_20240727_085508.jpeg) ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2024/07/full-3327-235342-resized_20240727_151924.jpeg)

What kinda bait y’all using to catch flatheads? Nice Cut bluegill. Hands down, the head portion seems to be the favorite. I've tried live bait, but cut bait catches more. I quit chasing skipjack, it has been a waste of time this year. I've also tried cut drum and buffalo. Those two baits resulted in zero bites. The key is to not let the cut bait soak for over 30 minutes. The pattern for the last couple of weeks is to drop baits behind a underwater hump. But it seems I can only catch one fish per stop. So I move around a lot. Dragging with planer boards is also another effective technique. But be prepared to lose a lot of tackle. This Saturday, I may drag baits over the mussel beds to see it produces some blues.

It’s funny you say that about buffalo and drum. I’ll occasionally catch small ones in the cast net and have tried them a few times live and cut, and not a single strike.

Right before and right after spawn the mussel beds will be loaded with blues. If you know where some mussel beds are, run your jugs back and forth over them. Some days I’ll catch one or two, make another pass and catch ten. I’ve got to where I run mine for 4/500 yards and pick them back up, run back to my starting point and repeat. I’ll catch 2/300 lbs of fish doing this.

If I'm fishing a tournament I will move about every 30 minutes if I'm not catching enough fish obviously you need to find some aggressive fish to get started.... When I get a decent limit I'll slow that down and move every hour or maybe longer trying to catch the bigger fish. Blues seem like do a lot more hunting around where Flatheads ambush the bait. You can fish the same way day in and day out for both but bait presentation is the key to flatheads. In my experience they don't travel well. I get a lot of single flatheads with cut bait on the bottom.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
