Dgambler......I've been trying to think of a good story to tell from some of the tracks this season but its been pretty bland so far......I mean its been fun but everything has been pretty straight forward finds. Not a whole lot to tell stories about. I've already told about the one interesting situation where I tracked the same deer twice. I havent heard back on that one to see if he made it or disappeared after we jumped him that second time.

I can show a few pics and who doesnt love pics of big deer.............

This is the biggest 8 point we've ever found......I found him for a guy back during bow season.....he went around 450 yards. It was a pretty tough track because he just wasnt putting out any blood. You can see how clean it is around the wound in the pic. He did just like most of them do though and headed to the creek where we picked back up on his scent and found him. I've actually seen one other 8 pt that was bigger than this one since I started tracking. It was a legitimate 150" eight pt......He was the reason I quit carrying a pistol and switched to carrying my 30-30....damn that one still hurts.

This was a really nice 10 pt we found during bow season…….This was another tough track. This deer was running down the creek bottom crossing back and forth across the creek you see in the back. He got to a place where the property’s interior road crossed the creek and that’s where he decided just to go in the water and not come back out……The scent trail just ended right there….I started my looping pattern to try and pick back up on it but wasn’t having any luck….I had just said to the hunter “Let’s turn around and see if we pick something up in another direction.”……when he spotted the buck laying down by the creek…..The joker had traveled probably 150 yards up the creek in the water….That’s how they do it sometimes.

Cool.
I went and tracked a goodun Wednesday morning a shot from Tuesday evening my dogs oldest track at almost 18 hours.
It is definitely crazy what deer do that we get to see when we tracking that folks don't realize they do.

.....or what they're capable of doing......When I first started tracking I tracked a little boy's first deer.....it was a young 4 pt.....we're talking about a small deer. It had been shot low in the guts on an evening hunt and the dad got after it tracking it that night. We found it in a big blow down on the side of the coosa river. It had gone a mile and half from the hit site and swam 150 yard slough of the river with its guts hanging out of its belly. They are tough critters....

That deer had bedded 3 or 4 different times in that big blow down.....Always check them when looking for a deer you cant find. Deer love to go to them and hide. The river is only like 5 yards to left of the little boy.........water......cover around water..... wink

Yes sir I had one last year that was liver shot good blood to the wound bed where I jumped him. We went a couple hundred dog crossed a creek amd turned and ce right back so I restarted at last blood he went to the same place and do the same thing so I thought deer is in the creek or got in and went up or down and then got out so thats what we did nothing. Well deer is in the creek or so I thought I restart again goes to same place so I told the hunter basically I don't know what he done but I feel like he's dead in this creek somewhere. He calls me the next morning amd says he got him I asked was he in the creek he said we was standing 2 foot from him when I called the track he was under a brush pile on the bank of the creek. I feel like the deer went in the water and back tracked under the brush pile won't ever know but it's fun to watch the dogs figure it out

Doing that type of stuff is pretty common and what you start looking for on tracks......If we take one to a creek now then I generally assume that the deer didnt leave the creek bottom.....and if he did then he's likely ok.....The really wounded ones will stay close to the creek. They may be in it.....laid on the side of it.....or sometimes tucked back just inside the thicket surrounding the SMZ.......but they're generally not leaving that water source

This is probably the best deer we've found this year so far....It was the first one of the season too. We were pretty much called in as an insurance policy. It was the biggest deer the hunter had ever killed and he wasnt sure about the shot because it was getting late and he wasnt finding any blood. The track was pretty straight forward. The deer went on about 150--175 yard little loop where he was piled up.... Very nice deer. Real small bodied and thought to be young.

Got on a live one in Madison county yesterday. Between a dump driver calling the cops and threatening to shoot me and about 30 heifers with calves trying to stomp my dogs while they had the deer bayed we never could catch back up to him. Most aggravating track I've been on.

Here’s another nice one we found during bow season…..Again, the creek came into play…..This buck was actually still alive the next morning. I spotted him bedded up on a peninsula in the creek before the dogs had a chance to track all the way to him. I toned them back and the hunter was able to put a finishing shot on him with his bow. The buck was laying down facing straight at us. The hunter shot him in the neck. If you look close you can see the fletchings under the deer’s head

I'd love to see some video of the dogs working and especially a bay/catch.

It's the most intense thing I've ever done as far as hunting goes.....You really need to be mentally prepared for what's about to unfold to be able to keep your composure and pull off the shot. I dont let the hunters take the gun anymore....one of the reasons why is because I saw what kind of come apart people were having in the heat of the moment.....and its very understandable.....hell, I still get the shakes and jitters from it myself. grin I think Mike was taking a video along with him for a short time period but quit. I was thinking about it but I never did and that's one reason why. I figure its just too cumbersome to try and pull off in our habitat. Now if you had a couple camera men following along....maybe you could get enough decent footage to see what's happening but it'd be tough. Things happen really fast and just all of sudden

Here’s an interesting track……I got called out to find a wide 6 point just outside the ears. This was on the youth hunt. I believe the dad said the little girl was sitting with her mother the evening before so in his defense I think he was just going off of what he was being told…..What we ended up finding was definitely not a 6 point just outside the ears….…..Chit happens sometime I guess. laugh
