I have just bought a female receptacle for a 4 prong trolling motor. This is not the round hole kind but has crescent slots and twist locks.
I am going to run it 12v and this plug is for either 12v or 24v. Looking at the back it has 4 wire screws set up like this
B- A-
A+ B+
How do I hook up my + and - leads for 12v? I am assuming A+ and A- but I don't know for sure.

It doesn't matter which prongs you use as long as you match the male and female plugs. The markings are there to help you keep polarity consistent but in reality it doesn't matter.

The male and female fit perfectly but shouldn't I use a - and a + on either the A side or the B side? Two + or two - don't seem to make any logical sense.

I may have misunderstood. ...you are replacing both male and female with new twist loc in place of the old push in standard trolling motor plugs correct?

If this is the case it makes no difference how you wire it...just keep it true on each side...black to A+ on one goes to black on "A+" on the other. They are all four capable of carrying the load it doesn't matter what they are "labeled". You can call one "cheeseburger" and the other "batman symbol" if you want, it's makes no difference to the electricity flowing through it either way.

Tc you dont think the lectricty will know the diffrence and turn around and go the other way
But seriously tc is right.long as you hook it up the same. Like a dude told me. Electricity dont know what color wire it s on. Thats just to help us identify.

I'm replacing the trolling motor with a 4 prong model. I have no idea how the plug on the new model is wired and I think I would destroy it to find out.
I had to buy the female connection. I have a positive and negative coming from my battery to hook to it.
If I could see which of the 4 prongs the + and - are on, on the male side it would be a snap.

You need to check them with a continuity meter. You have a meter?

Two of the prongs on the male side should have a small metal jumper across from + to -. Don't use those that's for 24 volt.

I really dislike those trolling motor plugs. Any and all of them. Whatever you do when you get it working don't unplug or bump into it much. Good luck and id recommend a test meter as well and double check plug on the 24 strip cause it can happen fast.
