It's no different than UA claiming titles in which a certain entity recognized UA as NC way back then. There were entities or entity that recognized AU as NC in those years you're talking about.

For years, there was no recognized "final word" on NC.. AP and UPI voted and if you'll remember when UA and USC split the unofficial NC and it was which poll a person wanted to recognize. And, you also had other polls such as NY Times, Coaches, etc... It was all subjective and a mess until the BCS formed and that wasn't perfect either and now we have the four team playoff.

AU is not the only team considering retro-claiming NC. Am I in favor of claiming retro NC? Not sure. I need to look at it more but there is no difference than what UA did several years ago and what AU may do today.
