Great job on some hard work punishment. But make sure you take the time to reach his heart too. Perhaps a personal sit down with a mother and father who lost a child to drunk driving. .. he needs his heart pricked to understand how to make wise choices. Then love him deeply while being firm with his punishment.

but last night he lied

Yowzers.

We've told our son and daughter from the time they were old enough to understand ... you may get in trouble, but you'll be in far, far worse trouble if you lie to us.

I know a kid isn't going to say "Well, parents, I'm going to Jimmy's tonight and we're going to camp out, drink some beer and then go mud riding at 3 a.m." Of course we'd say no.

So they lie, or don't tell the complete plan. And they don't think among themselves "Hmmm, at 3 a.m. we may be the only vehicles out on the roads. I wonder if the police might suspect something or stop us to see if we're drinking?"

Part of the learning process.

Once that scissor lawn care is complete have a truckload of volleyball-sized rocks delivered to your driveway. Have him move them one-by-one to the back yard "for a project." Once the pile is moved, have him move them back to the front because "well, I changed my idea about the project."

My father-inlaw did something similar to my brother inlaw when he came home drunk. He woke him up at 6:00 am and told him he wanted to move the firewood pile to the other side of the lawn. That took him abou4 hours and he was puking the whole time. Then my father inlaw goes back out and tells him that he decided he liked the original spot better so he needed to move it back.

I just hope your wife supports what your doing with him. Stepson and StepDad relationships can go south real quick if she starts undermining your efforts. Trust me...I'll show you the T shirt next time we meet up.

Yep, kids mess up but drinking and driving is a bad way to do it. I have a cousin that spent several years in the pen after killing people in a wreck when he was 18. Drinking and driving just isn't worth it.

The lying burns my ass. I've always told him that if he made the decision to drink that I would come get him with minimal repercussions. If he chose to drink and drive it would be his ass. He chose option B so ill be selling the 4wd and replacing it with a beater. If anyone need stars work done just hollar at me.

Good for you for selling the truck.

Friend of mine did the same. Told his son (and daughter) no drinking and driving or, if he found out, the vehicle would be sold. Son did, came home, was caught ... father sold it the next morning. Son was carted around by his parents in high school or friends with no vehicle for a long time.

Every, and I mean EVERY child screws up, take a step back and weigh the good VS the bad. This is a golden opportunity for both of yall to bond. Don't blow it and good luck.

Yeah. I told mine that if he ever got a DUI, he could sit down there at the county until they let him go. That's about the only problem we didn't have with him in the teen years.

Ain't that the truth. That's half the reason my stepson is the way he is today. He knew I wasn't going to bend on much of anything, but he learned how to play his mother against me. It took several long hard years to get her to come around to my way of thinking. By that time, he was already too far gone. After what happened last weekend, she really understands now.
