I have seen them on cotaco creek and the backwaters off of upper river road down by cave springs.Back in the early 90's they had to catch and move one that had made its home in that slough back behind the railroad tracks across from the boat harbor.

Very common sight up there.

That's wild... also been one on Logan Martin this year. About once every two or three years one shows up at Logan Martin, don't know where those rascals come from.

Well, I guess they survived the brutal cold this winter. Hard to believe. What a resilient critter.

They're misunderstood...

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Bunch of em in Limestone. Seen some 10+ footers up in there. Also seen em in stump flats around Swan Creek on big water. They are traveling on down river every year.. They've adapted to our winters..

They've been here since the early to mid-1970s, reintroduced by then-refuge director Tom Atkeson with the help of former U.S. Rep. Ronnie Flippo, from what I've been told.

Mostly found in the Limestone, Garth Slough, Cotaco areas. Breeding pair up in Blackwell Swamp for several years. The refuge had some baby gators at the visitors' center (maybe 8-10 years ago, or longer?) One was found in southwest Decatur a few years ago. Likely up in the Flint, too.

One was caught in the Florence area last year near a camping-swimming area.

Some people still don't believe they're here, either.

Yep... They released them to control beaver population and said that our winters would kill them... They were wrong..

I think Atkeson knew (a) the winters wouldn't hurt them and (b) beavers weren't really a problem. He just needed a good excuse so Flippo could grease the skids for relocation. grin

I remember reading Atkeson's column in The Decatur Daily each Sunday, along with Tony Estes' stories. Atekson always had a wild game recipe of some kind -- fish, duck, deer, weasel, whatever.

Every one of them included "Season liberally with black pepper." He probably consumed more black pepper than anyone in North Alabama!

Atkeson's history was quite remarkable, too. Severely injured, both hands severed, blinded and extensively burned by an anti-tank bomb explosion while training t Fort Hood for the Army during World War II, he rehabilitated and became the first director of Wheeler NWR. He had mapped the area for the government in 1939 before going to Fort Hood and then returned, becoming director in 1964.

Along with the gators he introduced many species. This story about him has some other interesting history.
