Alright guys, I am good with my chemicals but I am struggling to kill some Juncus Grass in a clover field. What is your prescription?

What is Juncus grass??? You mean Johnson?

Never mind I'm working on it now I found Juncus grass. This ones looking tough!

Nope. It is the crap you see in wet soils. Blades look more like needles. Our soil really isn't that wet but we have it and nutsedge in this one field.

Yep it's Bull Rush. Damn it's a tough one of course mowing it down is gonna be ur best option cause all the chemical recs I see are for Phenoxy or 24d. Better try to keep it clipped. It's a tough SOB I get calls on it every year in low areas in pasture. I'll see if I can find something though.

Well, we may have just gotten a bit lucky. It was pretty freshly mowed and I sprayed the clover with 2-4DB Monday. Guess I can let you know.

Yes do please but I'm afraid 24db isn't strong enough to kill that tough sucker. Hope it does though!

How old is the clover in the field? I've had that in one of my clover fields, we always called it wire grass. Clethodim wont kill it.Gly will kill it. If your clover is over a year old you could spray with a lighter dose of gly and it shouldn't kill your clover. It might brown it up a little, but it will bounce back. A lot of people use 1.25 qts of gly to an acre to kill grasses and weeds in clover without killing it, but it must be used in an established clover plot, not one you planted this past fall. They do this because gly is readily available and cheaper than clethodim and 24db.

I thought about that but I didn't figure it would work with a reduced rate. Might try it though.

We always called that water grass. Is it spread evening across your field or spotty? If it was spotty, you could kill those spots and sacrifice some clover. It may be best to get control of it first.

We always had it growing in a low spot, that held more moisture than the rest of the plot. Gly did it in. You could try 2 ounces/gallon and see what it does. You can't go too low, or you can build up a resistance to gly, and that would be bad. I've sprayed plots before with gly at a 2oz/gal rate to kill everything in it, and there was some clover. It killed everything else, and browned up the clover, but after the first good rain, she took off again. I would do it before it gets dry and the clover is stressed.

All of our clover is brown dead right now so I don't think it would hurt to spray and kill the grass anyway. Gly won't hurt the seeds.

It'll be a couple weeks before I get the chance. The way it's looking it will be too dry.

Nighthunter, why don't you mix up one gallon of gly, at a 2ozs/gallon rate and do a test spray, on say a 10'x10' area and see if it toasts the clover. You can over seed that area this fall, if it does, but i think you'll be surprised at how hardy white clover is, after its been established for a year or two.

Oh, I know. I have sprayed clovers with Gly before, my concern was It wouldn't be stout enough to kill the juncus grass. We got rain up there the last two days so I am going to try it in a spot and see what happens.
